What new steps can we take to tackle poverty in Wales? / Pa gamau newydd allwn ni eu cymryd i drechu tlodi yng Nghymru?

  • Wales Co-operative Centre launches online campaign to investigate new approaches to tackling poverty
  • ‘Tackling Poverty Fortnight’ will feature blog posts from experts across Wales, discussing their preferred approaches for targeting poverty

The Wales Co-operative Centre is launching its ‘Tackling Poverty Fortnight 2015’ campaign today (Tuesday 13th January). The campaign aims to unearth new approaches to tackling poverty and hopes to stimulate discussion on innovative approaches that could be implemented in Wales. The campaign will feature a series of blog posts from leading experts in poverty, older people, children, financial and digital inclusion, discussing specific ideas and methods that could help alleviate the problems of poverty.

The campaign will last until the 26th of January, known as Blue Monday – nominally the most depressing day of the year, as people review their debt levels after the Christmas break. Each blog post will be published on a new website, which has been created as a forum for discussion on these topics - www.everyonesbusiness.coop (www.busnesibawb.coop for Welsh language content).

The Wales Co-operative Centre will be publishing a series of blog posts during the campaign, featuring some of its own clients, alongside guest posts from other leading organisations working to tackle poverty and its effects. These include:

  • Graeme Francis from Age Cymru will look at the take up of financial entitlements in the retired population.
  • The Carnegie Trust advocating a move from welfare to wellbeing, utilising the latent entrepreneurial potential of Welsh students.
  • Chris Goulden calls for strategic support for the forthcoming Joseph Rowntree Foundation plan for eradicating poverty in the UK.
  • Foodcycle and FareShare Cymru look at innovative ways of using excess food from supermarkets to feed those who need it most.
  • Save the Children Wales call for the development of distinct Children’s Communities in Wales.

Other posts will celebrate co-operative housing developments in Rhyl, the importance of digital inclusion, the impact technology can make on Credit Union service delivery as well as posts from social enterprises and charities working with people who are among the most disadvantaged in Wales.

Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Lesley Griffiths, said:

“I welcome the Tackling Poverty Fortnight Campaign. Action to tackle poverty is a key priority for the Welsh Government but we cannot deliver this agenda on our own. It is critical we work with all stakeholders and partners.

“Tackling Poverty Fortnight will raise awareness of the issues in Wales and the work we need to take forward to improve the outcomes for low income households.”

Derek Walker is Chief Executive of the Wales Co-operative Centre which is promoting the campaign. He commented,

“The global economic crisis that started in 2008 has left a long and deep scar, and it’s only now showing signs of healing. There is still a stream of stories in the news about poverty levels, homelessness, food banks and businesses going to the wall.

“Tackling Poverty Fortnight allows us to look at some of the options available and approaches that have been tried in the rest of the UK and elsewhere to combat poverty and its causes.

“We have launched this campaign to try to engage organisations working in the field and find ways of working together, to find effective solutions that are suitable for delivery in Wales”.

  • Bydd ‘Pythefnos Trechu Tlodi’ yn rhoi lle amlwg i bostiadau blog gan arbenigwyr ledled Cymru a fydd yn trafod eu dulliau gorau o dargedu tlodi

Mae Canolfan Cydweithredol Cymru yn lansio’i ‘Pythefnos Trechu Tlodi 2015’ heddiw (dydd Mawrth 13 Ionawr). Mae’r ymgyrch yn anelu at ddarganfod dulliau newydd o drechu tlodi ac yn gobeithio ysgogi trafodaeth ar ddulliau arloesol y gellid eu rhoi ar waith yng Nghymru. Bydd yr ymgyrch yn cynnwys cyfres o bostiadau blog gan arbenigwyr blaenllaw ar dlodi, pobl hŷn, plant, cynhwysiant ariannol a digidol, lle byddan nhw’n trafod syniadau a dulliau penodol a allai helpu i leddfu problemau tlodi.

Bydd yr ymgyrch yn para hyd nes 26 Ionawr, a elwir yn ddydd Llun Llesg – diwrnod mwyaf diflas y flwyddyn mewn enw gan mai dyma pryd y bydd pobl yn adolygu’u lefelau dyled ar ôl gwyliau’r Nadolig. Bydd pob postiad blog yn cael ei gyhoeddi ar wefan newydd, sydd wedi’i chreu fel fforwm i drafod y pynciau hyn - www.busnesibawb.coop.

Bydd Canolfan Cydweithredol Cymru yn cyhoeddi cyfres o bostiadau blog yn ystod yr ymgyrch. Bydd y rhain yn cynnwys postiadau gan rai o’i chleientiaid ei hun yn ogystal â phostiadau gan westeion o sefydliadau blaenllaw eraill sy’n gweithio i drechu tlodi a’i effeithiau. Byddan nhw’n cynnwys y canlynol:

  • Bydd Graeme Francis o Age Cymru yn edrych ar faint o bobl yn y boblogaeth wedi ymddeol sy’n defnyddio’u hawliau ariannol.
  • Mae Ymddiriedolaeth Carnegie yn dadlau dros symud o les cymdeithasol i les yr unigolyn, gan ddefnyddio potensial entrepreneuraidd cudd myfyrwyr Cymru.

Dyfyniad posibl gan Weinidog

Derek Walker ydy Prif Weithredwr Canolfan Cydweithredol Cymru, sy’n hyrwyddo’r ymgyrch. Dyma sydd ganddo i’w ddweud,

Mae'r argyfwng economaidd byd-eang a ddechreuodd yn 2008 wedi gadael ei ôl yn eang ac yn ddwfn, ac mae'n dal i fod yn anodd gwybod a yw wedi dechrau gwella. Mae ffrwd ddiddiwedd o storïau yn y newyddion am lefelau tlodi, digartrefedd, cronfeydd bwyd a busnesau'n methu.

“Mae’r Pythefnos Trechu Tlodi yn caniatáu i ni edrych ar rai o’r dewisiadau sydd ar gael, ynghyd â’r dulliau sydd wedi’u rhoi ar waith yng ngweddill Prydain ac mewn mannau eraill i ymladd tlodi a’i achosion.

“Rydyn ni wedi lansio’r ymgyrch hon er mwyn ceisio ymgysylltu â sefydliadau sy’n gweithio yn y maes a darganfod ffyrdd o gydweithio fel y gallwn ddod o hyd i atebion effeithiol sy’n addas i’w rhoi ar waith yng Nghymru”.

Mae ‘Busnes i Bawb’ yn wefan newydd sy’n canolbwyntio ar fusnesau cymdeithasol a dulliau cydweithredol o drechu tlodi yng Nghymru. Gall defnyddwyr danysgrifio i ddiweddariadau rheolaidd ar http://www.busnesibawb.coop/cy/tanysgrifio/
