Press release -

Write Size makes child writing as easy as A, B, C.

Why is writing important?

Learning to write is a fundamental tool for a child’s development, but it can be a difficult skill to learn and master. By getting a head start with the right writing tools parents, school and pre-school teachers can help children begin to develop their writing skills at an early age. This in turn contributes to the child’s future success as a student and as an adult.

What you can do?

The right (or should that be write) tools matter for writing. Every child should have the best start to give them an advantage. It doesn’t always happen. Children are still given adult sized pencils to write with. It’s the equivalent of an adult writing with a pencil that’s a meter long.

The Write Start

Write Size pencils have been developed to lessen the strain on a child’s hand. This is done by making writing flow easier as they provide better grip, better control and most importantly are made to a better scale for children’s hands.

A number of parents and schools support the view that having a Write Size pencil makes a difference, but is any difference measurable?

Encouraging research

Peter Griffin, a Neuro Motor Developmental Therapist and former head teacher, conducted research to see if using Write Size pencils improved children’s writing and speed.

In May 2017 Peter studied a group of 17 reception class children (age 4-5). His findings show that all but one child improved when using Write Size pencils.

The results

  • 16 out of 17 pupils, one showed improved pencil control and fluidity using a Write Size pencil, compared to standard classroom pencils.
  • On average pencil control improved by 15%
  • 71% of the children’s writing speed increased when using a Write Size pencil.
  • On average pupils wrote 13% faster using the Write Size pencils. This equates to an average increase of 4 letters per minute.
  • The increase in speed was significant, with all writing more than 10% faster with the Write Size pencil.
  • Peter Griffin carried out further research in April 2017 on a class of 6-7 year olds. They were also tested on Pencil Control and Fluidity, plus Handwriting speed. 31 out of 32 pupils improved their handwriting with a Write Size pencil. On average the pupils wrote 12% faster using the Write Size pencil.

Further studies have been carried out that tested Write Size pencils with children aged 5-6 year olds and 3-4 year olds. All ages showed improvement with a Write Size pencil compared to a standard classroom pencil. Giving children who used the Write Size pencil had an advantage.
