Talking careers

It’s a strange day when you’re back at University standing at the front of a lecture theatre, telling students that there is life after being a dedicated undergrad (it’s a hard sell). But that’s what my colleague Gina and I did in January.

Back to Canterbury Christ Church we headed for an afternoon session as part of the University’s ‘employability week’ for students. Bizarre as it may have felt lecturing at the University I once attended, we regularly attend schools, colleges and Universities to discuss with students how full of possibilities a life in the creative industries can be.

We discussed our current roles at Zoodikers and how varied our average week actually is. We ventured back to our student days and provided some practical tips on how to use social media to appeal to prospective employers. Twitter is actually much more useful than it appears at first glance, and LinkedIn is a treasure trove of opportunity.

It’s such a diverse industry that we could only provide a taste of our time at Zoodikers. We’re lucky enough to work with a great team of people in a friendly and supportive environment - Zoodikers even has a ‘Youth Friendly Employer Gold Award’.

Our next talk is at Imberhorne School in early March where we’re continuing our work with ‘Inspiring Futures’ to motivate young people to make better-informed decisions about their career path.

Students have told us that they’ve found our advice and industry experience really useful. It’s a really good feeling when you know you’ve actually made a group of students feel positive about their impending job hunt. Clearly life does go on after University.
