The Back-Marker

Oh, I’m the man at the back today, ‘cause Karen volunteered me so;
And she’s up front showing us where to go, and I’m at the rear,
Swapping jokes with the lads, making sure we’re not too slow!
Now she’s got more Latin names for flowers and I’m completely at a loss.
For I’m just the man at the back today, I am the man at the back.

Oh, I am the man at the back today, so discreet when nature calls.
They fall to the back and jig about, just like a little boy who needs to go out,
And whilst you may wonder where they’ve been, I’ve counted them out and counted them all back in.
‘Cause that’s the job of the man at the back, and I’m at the back today.

Oh, I am the man at the back today and always the last man in.
There’s a crowd around the ice cream bar and the choice puts your head in a spin!
Or they’ve made their choice at the Pizzeria, some with chips on top and a great big beer,
But I’m just pleased to stop and sit on my rear, ‘cause I am the man at the back.

Oh, I am the man at the back today; yes, I am the man at the back;
And Karen seems to be losing her mind; she’s talking to the flowers and swearing blind.
The Bloody Geranium causes her great alarm and another one is the Bastard Balm;
And I hear it all today, ‘cause I am the man at the back!

Oh, I am the man at the back today and from here I can see it all.
Karen’s got that little twinkle in her eye; something’s going to happen by and by;
She’ll push together some single gal and guy or say we broke the record when we climbed up high;
And I can see it all from the back any day, ‘cause I am the man at the back!

Oh, I was the man at the back today; yes, I was the man at the back!
