Rugby Players Say ‘Try Reading’

Players from the Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Football Club are encouraging children to scrum on down and become members of Rochdale Borough Libraries.

Once they’ve joined, youngsters can try to tackle any of the huge variety of fiction and non-fiction titles available to borrow from any of the borough’s 17 libraries. With their own library card, children may borrow up to 12 books at a time and can take part in the annual summer reading challenge during the school holidays. Each library also offers free internet access which children can use with permission from a parent/guardian.

Rochdale Hornets’ new arrivals Sam Teo and Ryan Millard recently visited Norden Library to speak to Class 2 pupils from Whittaker Moss Primary school about the joys of reading. The children listened to stories read by Rochdale Borough Libraries’ Young Persons’ Library Worker, Ray Stearn, before questioning the players on their favourite books – with the Harry Potter series being a firm favourite. They then signed pictures for the children to take home.

Sam said: “Reading is great for children’s development and for their learning, so they should head down to their local library which they can join for free. As well as staying physically active, it’s great for them to keep mentally active too by reading.”
