Sika Limited: Sika Completes Acoustic Flooring Installation on Mein Schiff 5

Sika’s installation team used a range of products from its Sikafloor Marine® range to reduce both structure and airborne noise to maximise on board passenger and crew comfort.

The 99,800-ton, 2,534-passenger Mein Schiff 5 is the latest cruise liner from the TUI Group and has been built at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. It was launched in January following a 14-month construction period and its interior and exterior areas are currently being fitted out ahead of its official naming and maiden voyage in July. The Mein Schiff 5 uses highly innovative technology for environmentally-friendly ship operations. Each ship in this series consumes 30% less energy in comparison with vessels of similar size.

In most modern passenger vessels such as the Mein Schiff 5, one of the main issues for shipbuilders is to reduce the level of structural and airborne noise to modern acceptable standards. Simple absorber and mass systems are not enough to deal with low frequency structure borne noise. Combination floors using proprietary low frequency absorbing elements are required to reduce structure and airborne noise.

The floor-zone specification at new build and refurbishment stages is critical in passenger vessels today. Increased standards from regulatory authorities to ship-owners to improve on board comfort for their passengers and crew is pushing the evolution of new flooring systems from manufacturers.

In response Sika is continually developing its range of acoustic and A60 fire rated marine flooring systems. The Sikafloor Marine® range has been developed to produce market leading acoustic reduction factors, along with fast installation times, low weight factors and full FTCP A60 compliance.

The Sikafloor Marine® range has been widely used throughout the Mein Schiff 5 from primary deck coverings in cabins and walkways to composite Acoustic flooring systems throughout the high noise areas such as restaurants and entertainment areas. In total over 30,000 M2 of flooring has been installed
