In a process that began in 2012, Scandic and property owner Pandox are refurbishing 21 roadside hotels across Sweden. First on the list was Scandic Upplands Väsby, which was completed in December 2012. Now the hotel and Koncept, the firm behind the new design, have been chosen as one of five finalists for the prestigious European Hotel Awards.
The new hotel concept, which is being implemented in all 21 hotels scheduled for refurbishment, has been developed to take account of changing family constellations, new travel patterns and wider trends. The refurbishment is covering everything from reception and the lobby to the restaurant and guest rooms.
Design and architecture firm Koncept has created a uniform interior look that is repeated across all the renovated hotels to create a sense of recognition. Within this the different hotels are given their own identity by highlighting elements such as local celebrities, objects and symbols on specially designed wallpaper in the rooms, restaurant and conference area. Upplands Väsby, for example, has the pop group Europe, Helsingborg the Ramlösa water bottle and Umeå features birches and Västerbotten cheese.
"A place in the final of the European Hotel Awards is proof that we’ve got the design of our roadside hotels just right. The guests who use these hotels have high expectations of the rooms and the public spaces, and we’ve had an incredible response from them as well," says Johan Michelson, Scandic’s VP Brand & Products.
The award winners will be announced in London on 19 November.
