Sony UK joins 10:10 campaign by pledging to reduce carbon emissions by 10% in 2010

Sony UK announces today that it is getting behind the accelerating 10:10 campaign that is encouraging all Britons to unite by dropping their carbon footprint by 10% in 2010. Launched in September by the team behind the climate film ‘The Age of Stupid’, which stars Pete Postlethwaite, 10:10 has already had 50,700 people sign up as well as 1300 schools, 100 councils, 900 organisations and 1800 businesses.

“Environmental responsibility is at the very heart of Sony’s ethos and we have already cut our CO2 emissions as a business dramatically, but we are keen to take on the challenge to cut another 10% in 2010,” says Steve Dowdle, Managing Director, Sony UK. “Signing the 10:10 pledge is something that we believe is ambitious but also achievable and we hope the rest of the UK gets on board”.

Sony UK offices in Weybridge and Basingstoke will make the reductions by a combination of measures including cutting electricity and gas consumption in facilities and employee travel, especially flights.

Globally, Sony has reduced CO2 emissions by 92,000 tons in FY08, reducing  55,000 tons in Europe alone. The company also recently announced that it will aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% from Sony Group sites and reduce the average power consumption of Sony products by 30% by March 2016, with a global long term goal for a zero environmental footprint throughout the lifecycle of Sony's products and business activities.

The 10:10 campaign has picked up support from politicians including the entire cabinet, the Conservative opposition shadow cabinet and the Liberal Democrat party's frontbench. Stoke-on-Trent has even become the very first city to take the 10:10 pledge.
