Five medals for SportsAid athletes at IAAF Junior World Championships

There were five medals for SportsAid athletes at the IAAF Junior World Championships in Oregon where Morgan Lake (Jaguar Academy of Sport, see photo) led the charge by winning two golds.

The first came in the heptathlon, during which she broke the British high jump record, and the second came in the individual high jump on the final day of the competition.

She said, "I still can't really get over it. I was hoping to get one medal here and maybe another in two years’ time but to get two medals here, I'm really happy. Both titles mean the same amount to me, but the high jump was a bit of a surprise today so I'm really happy with that."

The other gold medallist was sprinter Dina Asher-Smith (GLL) who won the women's 100m just two weeks after breaking the British record in Germany with a time of 11.14 seconds. In Oregon, with a headwind, she clocked 11.23 seconds to finish well clear of second-placed Angela Tenorio of Ecuador and was delighted to be crowned champion.

She said, "I was just thinking about running as fast as I could to get to the line. I'm so happy; I can't believe that I'm world junior champion. So many great people have done it before and it's really humbling to be among them. I don’t normally celebrate but I just threw my arms in the air and I'm completely over the moon. I've worked really hard for it for such a long time and to be able to fulfil what I really wanted to do is amazing."

Two silver medals went to Shona Richards (GLL) in the 400m hurdles and the women's 4x400m team of Sabrina Bakare (GLL), Loren Bleaken (Judgement Day/Hogarth), Nikita Campbell-Smith (The Nottingham) and Cheriece Hylton (RBC Wealth Management).

The relay was the second fastest run a junior British women's team. finishing in 3:32.00.

Finishing just outside of the medals but setting a new British record was Yasmin Miller in the 100m hurdles who clocked a superb 13.13 seconds to take almost two tenths of a second off her previous personal best.
