Nile Wilson, Amy Tinkler and Alexander Buesnel win all-around titles at British Gymnastics Championships

Three SportsAid athletes have won all-around titles at the British Gymnastics Championships which ended at the Echo Arena in Liverpool yesterday.

Nile Wilson won the men’s under-18 category while Amy Tinkler (see photo) won the junior women’s category and Alexander Buesnel won the men’s disability category.

Nile’s victory came as a shock to the athlete who was ill just days before the competition was about to start.

“My preparations coming into this were quite tough as I’ve been ill all week but strangely I think that helped me,” explained the Leeds-based athlete who received SportsAid Awards between 2009 and 2012.

“This morning I was relaxed not really expecting too much and when I went out there to compete I found that I suddenly had lots of energy, the buzz of the crowd and the big competition obviously helped. I’m really happy with my high bar and rings in particular today but my whole competition to be honest went really well. It’s a very proud moment to win the British title and I’m hoping this is the start of a big year ahead. My aim is to make it into England’s Commonwealth Games team and results like this show I’m going in the right direction.”

In the women’s competition Amy Tinkler from Bishop Auckland (SportsAid Award 2013 from Lloyds Bank Local Heroes) was up against a strong field in which last year’s winner, Tyesha Mattis (from London, SportsAid Award 2013 from the Jaguar Academy of Sport), won gold on the vault and bars but sadly missed out on the all-around title after falling in four events.

Second in the junior women’s category was 14-year-old Teal Grindle from Tring (SportsAid Awards 2012-13 from Eversheds) who won gold on the beam, silver on vault and bronze on the floor and bars. Third place went to Catherine Lyons from London (SportsAid Awards 2012-13 from Girdlers).

With one more year to compete in this category Teal was described by British Gymnastics as having “plenty of potential for the future” following her performances in Liverpool.

In the men’s disability competition Alexander Buesnel from Jersey (SportsAid Awards 2010-12) finished just ahead of David Rae and Martyn Miles to win the title.

In the men’s under-18 competition, Brinn Bevan from Benfleet (SportsAid Award 2011) and Jay Thompson from Devon (SportsAid Award 2009) finished behind Nile Wilson in the silver and bronze medal positions.

The seniors saw the return of Olympic silver medallist Louis Smith MBE from Peterborough (SportsAid Awards 2007-08) in the men’s pommel but he didn't do enough to win the masters’ title which this year went to Dan Keatings from Corby (SportsAid Award 2008), while Max Whitlock beat both of them to the apparatus title.

Louis said, “I came here with a simple plan to do my routines clean and I did that, which I am really happy about. My big picture now is to try and get a place on the team for the European and the Commonwealth Games, I just need to keep doing my routines clean.  The way gymnastics has evolved in the last few years in Great Britain is brilliant and it showed here with the atmosphere tonight.  It was a great crowd to compete in front of.”

In the men’s rings competition, SportsAid’s 2012 One-to-Watch Award winner Courtney Tulloch from Maidstone (SportsAid Awards 2011-14 from Kent County Council) won a silver medal behind Dan Purvis (from Liverpool, SportsAid Award 2006).

A special mention must also go to 14-year-old Joshua Nathan from Nottingham (SportsAid Award 2014) who won a gold medal on the pommel in his first year in the under-16 category. His score of 14.250 “would rival some of Britain’s more senior gymnasts” according to British Gymnastics. He also won under-16 bronze medals for his floor and parallel-bars routines.
