Record-breaking Games for SportsAid athletes in Stoke Mandeville

SportsAid athletes have enjoyed a very successful week at the IWAS World Junior Games in Stoke Mandeville which ended on Friday with a number of record-breaking performances.

In athletics, Kyle Powell and Toby Gold both broke two European records. Kyle's came in the T45 100m and 200m with times of 11,46 and 23,58 while Toby's came in in the T33 100m and 400m wheelchair races with times of 17,96 and 1:02,40. Kyle won a silver medal in each race – narrowly losing on points to Russia’s Alexandr Chernega both times – while Toby won two bronze medals, adding to the third bronze medal he won in the 200m.

There were dominant performances from Paralympian Hollie Arnold in the discus and javelin, taking the U23 titles in both events, and from Polly Maton who topped the list of athletics medallists (below) with three gold medals.

In archery, there was a bronze medal for Harriet Little (from the Isle of Wight, SportsAid Awards 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) while Jess Stretton (from Hemel Hemstead, SportsAid Award 2014) won an individual gold medal on her international debut as well as a team bronze medal. A further two medals went to archer Megan Fosberry (from Leighton Buzzard, SportsAid Award 2014) who won silver in the W1 compound and team events.

She said, "I am really pleased with the silver medal. After I got settled in the environment and got in to the whole competition it relaxed me then I could just go for it. And it was really good to have the support of my family with me."

In fencing, Dimitri Coutya (from London, SportsAid Award 2013 from Lloyds Bank Local Heroes) won a bronze medal.

There was more success in table tennis for Nicko Anderson (from London, SportsAid Award 2014 from Prudential) who won bronze in the singles and gold in the team events. He shared that team victory with another SportsAid athlete, Daniel Bullen (from St Neots, SportsAid Awards 2009, 2013, 2014), who added a silver medal to his tally after a defeat to Megan Shackleton (from Todmorden, SportsAid Awards 2013 and 2014) in the singles final.

Megan said afterwards, "I think I have overcome a hurdle of controlling my nerves this week, normally I am really nervous but recently I have been able to control that better.

"I wanted to play my best and I am very happy to win the gold medal and it means a lot to me."

Lucy Bouron (from Bracknell, SportsAid Award 2014 from Prudential) also finished on the table tennis podium, winning a team bronze medal.
