Brierley Hill Stroke survivor set to tackle Great Birmingham 10K

Sarah Hall, a 35 year-old-stroke survivor from Brierley Hill, is planning to take part in the Great Birmingham 10k on 1 May 2016 to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.

In April 2014, Sarah had a stroke while on a training run for a half marathon. The stroke had an impact on Sarah’s emotions and cognitive skills. Following her stroke, Sarah received extensive support from her local Stroke Association group and is now is preparing to tackle her third fundraising challenge for the charity which supported her throughout her recovery.

Sarah said: “This 10k is so important to me because it falls on the anniversary of my stroke. I’m now aiming to run in the Great Birmingham 10k every year as a celebration of my recovery – I want as many people as possible to know that there is life after stroke.

“In October 2014 after my stroke, and in October 2015, my partner Lee took on the half marathon that I’d been planning to finish, and we raised £1,500 in total for our local Dudley Stroke Association support group. This time last year, I ran the Great Birmingham 10k on the 1st anniversary of my stroke, and raised another £1,000.

“This year I decided to run again to raise fund for the Stroke Association so that other people in my situation have the same support that I was lucky enough to have received. The charity has given me information, support and a friendly face on so many occasions, and they've helped me understand and come to terms with my life after stroke.”

Katrin Winstanley, Events Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes - it is vital that we have people like Sarah to help raise funds. It’s wonderful to see how far Sarah has come with her recovery; she’s a real inspiration. The funds raised will help ensure we can be there for even more families affected by stroke.”
