Scandic reduces its environmental impact - Sustainability report – first half of 2013

During the first half of 2013, Scandic’s energy consumption fell by 0.42%, water consumption was down 3.26% and unsorted waste was 10.17% less, compared with the same period last year. Emissions of carbon dioxide have, however, risen by 4.71%.

Scandic receives prestigious award from TripAdvisor

Only 10% of all the hotels represented on TripAdvisor have been given this honour. Forty of Scandic’s hotels have now received a Certificate of Excellence, accounting for almost 26% of Scandic’s portfolio.

Net operating profit (EBITDA) came in at EUR 27.6 (32.6) million, giving a profit margin of 6.2% (7.4%). Extensive refurbishment work has led to reduced capacity, which has had an impact on revenue and profits. Scandic opened three new hotels with a total of 659 new rooms.

Scandic restaurants to stop using palm oil

Jul 04, 2013 15:33 BST Scandic Hotels For environmental reasons, Scandic has decided to discontinue the use of palm oil and replace it with rapeseed and sunflower seed oil. The hotel chain’s 160 restaurants use around 75 cubic metres of oil in deep-frying every year. Palm oil is grown in areas which were previously covered by tropical rain forests – forests which are regarded as the most diverse eco systems in the world.

Fast-forward 50 years and the hotel chain has enjoyed strong growth, making its mark on both the Swedish and the international hotel industry along the way. In 1984, Esso Motor Hotell changed its name to Scandic Hotels, a chain that now has 155 hotels and around 30,000 rooms across Europe.
