(Fornebu, 2 July 2017) Ookla, the company that measures the speed of mobile networks across the globe, has recently pinpointed the Telenor mobile network as the fastest in Norway.
“We are proud to recognise Telenor as the winner of the 2017 Speedtest Award for Norway's Fastest Mobile Network, based on Ookla's analysis of Speedtest results from Q1 and Q2 of 2017,” said Doug Suttles, CEO of Ookla.
“Since Telenor removed speed limitations in September 2016, Speedtest results taken on Telenor's network have cumulatively shown that they have been the fastest mobile operator in Norway for nine months in a row. This is the largest speed increase we have ever seen in such a short time period — so much so that Telenor's speeds are among the fastest in the world. This is a very impressive development, especially considering the valleys and mountainous regions in Norway that can make it difficult to build a mobile network, and it clearly shows Telenor as having Norway's fastest network,” Suttles continued.
One of the world's fastest networks
“We at Ookla look forward to following the future development of the Norwegian market. Telenor customers are fortunate to have one of the fastest mobile networks available globally, particularly given the importance of mobile phones in the Scandinavian market,” concluded Suttles.
Ookla's award is based on measurements across the whole of Norway during the first half of this year, in which Telenor's customers enjoyed an average download speed of over 54 Mbits — an incredible 10 Mbits faster than the operator in second place. As the award is based on several thousand daily speed measurements using the Ookla Speedtest app, this speed accurately reflects the service received by users in practice throughout the country.
Telenor continues development
“This is the best recommendation that our mobile network could have received, and the award assures both our customers and us at Telenor that our significant mobile improvements are having deep impact. This encourages us to continue investing heavily in our mobile network; in particular, we are now working hard to provide nationwide 4G coverage,” says Director of Coverage at Telenor, Bjørn Amundsen.
Amundsen stresses that Telenor has followed a unique strategy in expanding the network, in which different frequencies complement one another.
“The result is a stable and very fast mobile network that allows you to talk, stream and surf seamlessly. The entire 4G network has been upgraded to 4G+, meaning it is better prepared to deal with large amounts of traffic while also maintaining high speeds,” says Amundsen.
Maximum speed for all
Telenor emphasises that the upgrade of Norway’s largest mobile network has been, and still is, a long-term project.
“The development of the mobile network is an on-going project. Years in the future, we will continue modernising and developing the mobile network to ensure that Norwegians benefit from a world-class mobile experience,” says Bjørn Ivar Moen, Head of the Mobile Division at Telenor.
It was in September last year that Telenor removed the speed limitation on its mobile subscriptions and activated unlimited speed for all of its mobile customers. Since then, Telenor customers have consistently enjoyed the highest speeds in the market.
Unlimited speed means that both private and business customers get access to the highest upload and download speeds on the network, or maximum speed, wherever they are.
“Telenor's most recent network modernisation efforts are designed to provide not only an excellent streaming or surfing experience via mobile but also integrated 4G Tale (Voice over LTE) and WiFi Tale (Voice over WiFi) for Android and iPhone, which offer radically improved voice quality. In addition, these services are historically major efforts for thoroughly improving indoor coverage,” explains Bjørn Ivar Moen.
