Walpurgis Ball 2016: The Savoy with Måns Zelmerlöw
The now very popular Walpurgis Ball was first introduced in the SCC event calendar in 2013. Traditionally a feast to ward off winter and evil spirits, the Walpurgis Ball seeks to celebrate the arrival of spring.
New this year is that we are joined by the very talented Swedish singer and 2015 Eurovision Song Contest winner Måns Zelmerlöw.
In Sweden, Walpurgis Night (Swedish: Valborgsmässoafton or simply Valborg) has more or less become a de facto half holiday. Singing traditional songs of spring is widespread throughout the country. The songs are mostly from the 19th century and were first spread by students' spring festivities.
The strongest and most traditional spring festivities are, unsurprisingly, also found in the old university cities, Lund and Uppsala, where undergraduates, graduates and alumnus gather at events that last most of the day from early morning to late night on 30 April, or "sista april" (the last day of April) as it is called in Lund and Uppsala.
