Unexpected associations found between drug response and cell changes in brain cancer

Press releases   •   Jul 14, 2020 17:00 BST

Therapies for treating glioblastoma brain cancer can be delivered with greater precision and existing drugs can be used in new ways. These are the conclusions from a study from Uppsala University investigating a large number of cell samples from patients with brain tumours. The researchers have characterised how changes in glioblastoma cells influence the effect of different drugs.

New insights into evolution: why genes appear to move around

Press releases   •   Mar 04, 2020 19:00 GMT

Scientists at Uppsala University have proposed an addition to the theory of evolution that can explain how and why genes move on chromosomes. The hypothesis, called the SNAP Hypothesis, is presented in the scientific journal PLOS Genetics.

New evolutionary insights into the early development of songbirds

Press releases   •   Nov 29, 2019 10:46 GMT

An international team led by Alexander Suh at Uppsala University has sequenced a chromosome in zebra finches called the germline-restricted chromosome (GRC). The researchers found that the GRC is tens of millions of years old and plays a key role in songbird biology, having collected genes used for embryonic development.

A genetic tug-of-war between the sexes begets variation

Press releases   •   Nov 18, 2019 16:00 GMT

In species with sexual reproduction, no two individuals are alike and scientists have long struggled to understand why there is so much genetic variation. In a new study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, a team of researchers from the University of Uppsala in Sweden now show that a genetic tug-of-war between the sexes acts to maintain variation.
