London will soon be confronted with the challenge of managing one of the largest mass gatherings in the world as Britain’s capital city opens the London Olympic Games 2012. Over a period of 19 days, over 7 million visitors will descend on London to enjoy the historic games. With them will come a range of huge challenges for the organisers – chief among them will be the possibility of major health pandemics.

Tonight’s In Focus on Islam Channel (Sky 813) will see Carl Arrindell interview Prof Ziad Memish, Saudi Arabian Deputy Public Health Minister – the man responsible for managing the Health issues of between 3 to 4 million pilgrims who each year when they make the journey from 183 different countries to the Holy City of Mecca. The interview reveals the enormous challenges faced by a dedicated medical team which has to administer 100s of thousands of vaccinations each year and to deal with a wide range of complex medical problems brought from different communities.
