Louise Burfitt-Dons Sends Kind Support To Camra
UK Kindness Movement
May 08, 2012 15:13 BSTTuesday, 8th April 2012—London–A former publican and founder of the UK Kindness Movement is supporting Camra’s campaign to save UK pubs.
Louise Burfitt-Dons has written to Camra with the following message of support.
`As a past publican myself, I know how much communities value their local. They are much more than just a place to drink. They are also where you go after 5.30 when all the village shops are closed and you need directions. Or a friendly listening ear after a long day. To many older people, the nearby pub is their only social outlet.’
`Publicans do not earn big money, and they work seven days a week, fifty two weeks of the year. As well as this, these small businesses are essential to our economy, because they provide homes as well as employment. In particular they give young people a job suited to their age and temperament and also with flexible hours.’
`Kindness and sociability are closely linked. Without the local pub, the UK would seem a less considerate country to live in and to visit. The local is part of UK’s kind image.’’
The British Beer & Pub Association, the Society of Independent Brewers and the Campaign for Real Ale have been lobbying the Chancellor to reduce duty on beer.
The beer and pub industry supports almost 1 million jobs, many of them in the 16-24 year age bracket and contributes £21 billion to UK GDP.
