Yes, We Do Like to be Beside the Seaside.

The BBC has highlighted a recent study that suggests we really: ”… do like to be beside the seaside.”

Bournecoast, the area’s leading supplier of self catering holiday accommodation, said that the study which was carried out by the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH) looked at how different environments in the outdoors could generate differing reactions in respect of relaxation and calmness. One of the researchers said this could reflect an instinctive preference for the sounds and sights of water and that being beside the coast was significantly more likely to create a feeling of tranquillity.

The study carried out over a two year period by the British Psychological Society of 2,750 people inEngland, examined the effects of different types of outdoor environments on people. It was found that the bracing sea air had a more positive effect than the countryside or an urban park, with the greatest sense of pleasure coming from taking exercise beside the sea. It was irrelevant how old the participants were, where they lived and who they were with when they were visiting the coast.

Six different age groups identified the seaside as always being a more positive experience than other inland parks or country walks, with those who were travelling alone particularly likely to get more enjoyment from the coast.

Des Simmons, MD of Bournecoast said; “There were no clear conclusions given as to why the seaside should be more refreshing than other types of settings but the researchers are considering a range of possible associations including investigating the idea that people respond in a positive manner to the way light plays on the water, or the therapeutic sounds of the sea.

He added; “There are also other conclusions, including social or cultural expectations about the benefits of the seaside which, suggest the researchers, remind the individual of associations with happy times such as childhood memories of holidaying with family and friends.”

The researchers say that there has been a growing awareness of the importance of relaxation in preventing ill health.
