Hitchin eye cancer youngster opens new Vision Express store

Press Release   •   May 28, 2014 11:59 BST

11-year-old eye cancer survivor Kyle unveils Hitchin’s new High Street store

Vision Express has opened a new store in Hitchin with a special visit by a local family who are campaigners for a rare form of eye cancer.

Mellissa Yeupiksang accompanied 11-year-old son Kyle, both from Hitchin, as he performed a ribbon cutting to officially unveil the optical retailer’s latest new store. Their visit was as guests representing the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT), which is the nominated charity of Vision Express.

Kyle was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma aged eight, which is unusually late for this childhood cancer to be detected. His treatment involved the removal of his left eye, and following support from CHECT, Kyle is a dedicated fundraiser for the charity. He has completed the Carrots six-mile nightwalk on two occasions, raising over £3,000 to support CHECT’s work with families affected by the condition.

Last year Vision Express employees and customers raised £105,000 for CHECT, and the new Hitchin store team will be tasked with a fundraising target of £1,000 over the next 12 months.

With new facilities and equipment, the Vision Express Hitchin store will help deliver a thorough vision care service to the local community, led by experienced husband and wife team Ash and Shital Shah, who also own the Stevenage Vision Express store.

Store director Ash Shah said: “We’re thrilled to be able to offer a high standard of individual care to the local community from our new store, and it was fantastic to welcome Mellissa and Kyle to help us celebrate our opening day. Their visit brings a real sense of the impact of this rare eye cancer, and we’re looking forward to putting our fundraising plans into action to support CHECT.”

Vision Express offers an eye examination to best practice guidelines of the College of Optometrists (COO), with each Vision Express optometrist being a qualified eye health professional. To book an eye test visit the Hitchin Vision Express store at 23 High Street, call 01462 456571 or visit
