​One fifth have never had an eye test – reveals Vision Van initiative after record National Eye Health Week

2017 campaign prompts best-ever eye test bookings at Vision Express

As results from its latest Vision Van campaign reveal over a fifth have never had their eyes tested, Vision Express is urging the UK public to prioritise their eye health.

An official partner of National Eye Health Week 2017, the national optician took its distinctive Vision Van back on the road, targeting eye health hotspots around the country.

Starting in its hometown of Nottingham, Vision Express visited areas with a high propensity for sight-related problems and health conditions, including Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Swindon and Cardiff, offering free sight tests on board its high-tech mobile testing unit.

Almost three quarters of those tested (74%) on the Vision Van from 18 to 24 September had an out of date prescription, and 9% were referred for further medical attention.

As part of the campaign, Vision Express offered free eye tests to all, prompting the highest number of online bookings in the optician’s history, surpassing the record number of bookings achieved for the 2016 campaign.

Throughout the #EyeWeek initiative there was a 30% increase in online eye tests booked compared to 2016, and website visits were 14% up on this year’s average weekly figures.

Jonathan Lawson, Vision Express CEO, commented: “We’re very aware that affordability is an issue for many, with 37% of people putting off having an eye test due to cost concern, so the record response to our free eye test offer is encouraging.

“While some people believe offering this essential check for free devalues eye health, by removing the cost barrier, we can encourage more people to take steps to keep their eyes healthy.

“Every time we back events and awareness weeks, such as National Eye Health Week, we get people coming in for eye tests, who otherwise wouldn’t have had eye care. For me, that’s something everybody should be putting their weight behind and supporting.”
