No more burnt nipples for Adam Chapman – thanks to yoomi

When Jim Shaikh, CEO of yoomi, the self warming baby bottle, heard that Adam Chapmanl of Oxford United played through the pain of a burnt nipple after making up a feed for his baby the night before, he was instantly taken back to when it was him preparing the night feeds for his eldest son, Danial, now 9.

Danial was born 6 weeks early and like Adam, Jim’s job was to get the bottle ready in the middle of the night.  But rather than facing “splashback” Jim  would fall asleep whilst waiting for the expressed breast milk to warm and would often end up having to cool it down under the tap much to the frustration of his lawyer wife and cries from his hungry son.  When challenged by his wife to find a simpler, quicker and easier way of warming a baby’s feed, Jim (an engineer) worked on a solution. With help from experts, friends and family, Jim invented, yoomi, the UK’s first self-warming baby bottle. At the touch of a button, yoomi gently warms baby’s feed to the perfect temperature of breast milk in just 60 seconds.  Taking away all the stress and worry of warming the night feed, yoomi is perfect for those sleep deprived, anxious, first time dads doing the night feeds.

The technology:

The yoomi warmer, which contains the same gel used in hand warmers, is activated by simply pressing the orange button.  By using a clever ‘phase change’ material (meaning it changes from a liquid to a solid) yoomi generates heat.  The cold feed is gently warmed as it flows through the specially designed channels on the outside of the warmer.  By the time the feed reaches the teat, it is at natural breast milk temperature (32-34˚C). The warmer has been cleverly designed so that it cannot overheat the feed and stays warm for up to an hour.

About Jim Shaikh:

Jim Shaikh is an entrepreneur and CEO of yoomi Ltd. Jim completed a Masters in Engineering at Imperial College (1988) before obtaining a PhD from Cambridge University (1993). Initially an academic, Jim quickly moved into mainstream engineering with Rover-BMW and then into consulting engineering. He completed an MBA at London Business School (2003) and was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug when awarded first prize at the LBS Entrepreneurship Summer School.
