International Fund for Animal Welfare Chooses HP to Power Global Efforts

Press Release   •   Nov 09, 2011 05:26 EST

HP today announced that the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has chosen HP Converged Infrastructure to support its operations in 15 offices around the world with improved technology performance to meet demands of operating global charity efforts.

IFAW was created four decades ago to protect white-coat harp seals against commercial hunting on the eastern coast of Canada. Today, IFAW is the world’s leading international animal welfare organization focused on saving threatened species and animals in crisis through a variety of campaigns and programs.

The organization’s primary data center, housed in an older building at its U.S. headquarters in Massachusetts, suffered from space, power and cooling constraints. Additionally, IFAW was looking to upgrade its technology infrastructure to continue to effectively manage increasing global business demands.

As an HP partner for more than 12 years, IFAW chose HP Technology Services to manage the relocation of its data center to a more energy-efficient building that recently gained LEED gold certification. HP helped IFAW move more than 40 HP ProLiant servers and other infrastructure in less than 24 hours. As part of the relocation, IFAW consolidated its data center with HP Converged Infrastructure technology, including servers, storage and networking equipment with unified management.

“We needed to upgrade our existing facility to meet increased demands of our global charitable work both presently and in the future,” said Phyllis Bayer, director, IT Operations and Facilities, International Fund for Animal Welfare. “With the help of HP, we were able to relocate to a new building to continue support for our global fundraising efforts and donor demands.”

The new data center now includes HP Integrity RX2620 and RX6600 servers running on HP-UX to effectively support critical business applications, such as the donor database, an internal portal, mail systems and Oracle financial applications.

HP ProLiant servers, including HP ProLiant DL380 G7 servers with advanced virtualization support, provide IFAW with more efficient and reliable remote support at its U.S. headquarters, as well as country offices in Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

The high-performance servers allow the organization to filter donor statistics and quickly engage supporters in specific projects. This includes giving country offices, with only one HP ProLiant server each, the ability to simply access information from the headquarters’ data center. Additionally, the new HP ProLiant servers at its headquarters allow IFAW to save energy within the data center and provide a starting point for future virtualization projects.

IFAW’s infrastructure also includes HP Enterprise Virtual Arrays (EVA), which are designed to handle its growing storage requirements as a result of their donor database application. The storage arrays allow IFAW to increase storage utilization, keep the database running 24/7 and adapt quickly to changing business conditions. The EVA’s HP Command View Software eases management, ensuring less time spent on maintenance and administrative tasks.

HP Ultrium 448 and 460 Tape Drives in the country offices provide additional backup storage to allow the organization’s remote locations to more easily access the database. Additionally, HP Data Protector Software simplifies protection of IFAW’s applications by automating backup and recovery procedures to disk and tape.

As part of the relocation, IFAW upgraded its network backbone by standardizing on the HP Networking 5400 zl switch series, which allows the organization to more efficiently communicate with clients with a faster connection than the previous network configuration. IFAW uses this networking technology along with HP 2510 and HP 2810 switch series to ensure that its offices around the world are connected and can scale as business demands peak.
