The Worcester Historical Museum has announced that Mary C. (Streeter) DeFeudis will receive the Ninth Annual Harvey Ball Smile Award — and, we say, you would have to scour every nook in the city to find a more worthy choice.

Just take a look at this partial list of Mary’s many community achievements, which have resulted in smiles all around town and beyond: founding member and member of the board of directors of the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts; chairman of the board of directors for the University of Massachusetts Memorial Foundation; member of the board of trustees for Nichols College, where she has started an annual Mary DeFeudis Scholarship for deserving students; board of directors, American Red Cross; the Mark R. Ungerer Driving for the Cure Golf Tournament, providing critical support for cancer research and treatment programs at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She also is active with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, as well as other health, human services, and educational institutions.

The award will be presented at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 in a gala ceremony at the Worcester Country Club. The award was established by the Worcester Historical Museum in 2000 to honor the legacy of Harvey Ball and his world-famous 1963 creation, Smiley Face
