The global market for measles testing is expected to record significant growth rate in the near future. The growth would be observed due to advancement in immunodiagnostic technologies and automation. Additionally growth in this industry would be fuelled by entry of new market players, growing awareness about the disease and outbreaks of the infection in the developing countries. For instance, in 2007 in Japan large number of institutions and other industries were closed as an attempt to contain the disease. Additionally as per the WHO approximately 158,000 deaths were caused due to measles in 2011. Hence, increasing prevalence of the infection would increase the demand for measles testing.

Measles also referred to as morbilli or rubeola is an infection caused by virus known as paramyxovirus which belongs to genus morbillivirus. Measles is an infection of immune system, respiratory system and skin. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease, typically occurring due to more than 90% of the household contacts and more than 50% contact in the day care centers or school. Measles is observed to be spread through respiratory contact with infected person’s nose and mouth fluid or directly through aerosol transmission. Initially patients infected with show symptoms such as cough, inflamed eyes, fever, sore throat, fever, runny nose, and red blotchy skin rash. Later, with the disease progression the patients show symptoms of diarrhea, pneumonia and spot like rashes that covers the entire body. Among all the measles case reported only 10% of the cases are complicated and for every ten children developing encephalitis measles die and up to four show permanent brain damage. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which causes progressive brain degeneration is a late complication of measles and occurs in about 1 in 25,000 cases.
Measles is commonly a disease of children and in most of the developed countries children are immunized against measles by the age of 18 months. Measles vaccines are generally part of MMR vaccine (mumps, measles and rubella) vaccine. The vaccination is generally not prescribed before 18 months as sufficient amount of immunoglobulins are acquired by the new born through mother’s placenta. A second dose of vaccine is usually administered during the age of four and five, to increase the rate of immunity. Hence, in developed countries to control the prevalence of measles vaccination rate are high. However, in developing countries two doses of measles vaccination are prescribed at the age of six months and two months. In addition to vaccination, serological diagnosis is also performed for the identification of measles infection. In these test diagnosis of IgG and IgM antibodies is performed for the diagnosis of infection. The global market for measles testing can be segmented on the basis of diagnostic tests, instruments, technologies and end users. End users section of the report can be analyzed on the basis of physician offices, public health laboratories and commercial and private laboratories.
North America is observed to be the largest market for measles testing due to presence of major market players based in this region. According the Centers for Disease Control and prevention from January 1st 2014 to April 2014 approximately 6,000 confirmed and 26,000 suspected cases of measles have been reported in Philippines. Hence, increasing cases of patient diagnosed with measles would further trigger the growth in this market. Europe is expected to record the second position in the global measles testing market.
Abbott Laboratories, Biomedical Diagnostics, Bio-Rad, Dako, Beckman Coulter, BioMerieux, DiaSorin, Eiken and Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics and others are some of the major players operating in clinical chemistry and immunodiagnostics market.
