Biomedical equipment technicians install, inspect, maintain and repair patient care equipment. They ensure this equipment is safe, functional and properly configured. They are employed by hospitals, clinics, manufacturers, dealers, the private sector and the military. BMETs also educate and advise medical staff on operation, physiological principles and safe clinical application of biomedical equipment.
One of the greatest advantages of this career field is the exceptionally broad range of medical equipment that requires preventative maintenance and repair. BMET Program Supervisor and Instructor Richard Sandidge explains, “an entry level BMET who demonstrates a desire and an aptitude to advance in the field could, after gaining some experience, find themselves moving into a specialized area of medical equipment maintenance, such as radiology.”
Sandidge has a total of 38 years of experience in the field of service and repair, 25 of them in biomedical equipment technology. He believes he can “bring a substantial amount of professional life experience to the classroom, which will enhance the learning process for the student.”
The official start date of the new Biomedical Equipment Technician program at IntelliTec College in Colorado Springs is January 7th, 2013. Medical and laboratory equipment - including centrifuges, infusion pumps, electrosurgical units and suction pumps - will be available for students to learn with in a hands-on environment. Students will learn the operation of each type of equipment and gain experience in diagnostics, testing and troubleshooting malfunctions.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Employment of medical equipment repairers is projected to grow 31% from 2010 to 2020…Greater demand for healthcare services and the use of increasingly complex medical equipment will drive employment growth." Those who hold an associate degree can have the best opportunities at finding a career and achieving advancement in this field.
