Fuel flow indicators measure less or excess fuel flow and helps to check fuel wastage caused by rich-burn engines. It works with aid from Aircraft Engine Sensors, located behind the fuel filter, in combination with MAP (manifold air pressure). It not just saves money but also keeps the engine cleaner; which means, a less maintenance cost.
The JPI’s Aircraft Fuel Flow Indicator uses modern sensors that connect to a modern, Digital Gauges. This gauge is installed in the cockpit. It is highly accurate; as accurate as digital. The latter are also manufactured by JP Instruments.
Rich-of-Peak is a technique that runs the aircraft engine with an excess of fuel in the cylinder. This is done to keep the engines cooler, but on the flip side, the carbon builds up on the exhaust faster. It also increases cylinder pressure. But with Lean-of-Peak or LoP, the piston pushes longer, gentler and slower. The peak cylinder pressure now develops later than the top-dead-centre position than with RoP, at a time when the piston has travelled further along its downward stroke. So, a hammer blow changes into a gentle push. The engine shall operate at exactly the same horse power but with a 35°F lower cylinder head temperature. This equates to a better speed, lesser fuel flow and a longer life for the engine.
The less fuel consumption occurs since LoP makes all fuel in the cylinder get used. There remains nothing to blow back and contaminate the oil. This means lesser carbon deposits and savings on the maintenance. And contrary to the belief that LoP is good for low power settings, it helps to obtain 75% of the engine’s power without using extra fuel. The fuel flow indicators help you detect that.
For, without measuring fuel flow, you must rely on approximations; either about the flight time or about the fuel flow rate for each phase of flight. JPI’s aircraft fuel flow indicator uses small turbine transducers to measure the fuel flowing into the engine. It rotates faster with higher fuel flows Aircraft Level Sensors and slower with the lean ones. They generate pulses this way and measure the gallons used per hour with high resolution. These fuel flow indicators can also keep track of the fuel used if you log the total fuel amount into them right at the beginning. Additionally, you will also be able to detect various other parameters. There are indicator lights to show the information currently displayed and mode of operations that can be selected with front panel operating buttons.
