Avinode has seen the pace of growth for its online charter marketplace quicken over the last year, with available aircraft in the region increasing by nearly 50% in the Marketplace between Q1 2012 and Q1 2013. This marks a significant upturn from the 5% growth recorded over the previous year.
“We’ve seen a remarkable increase in interest from Asian operators and brokers since our ABACE debut last year,” says Avinode Regional Sales Manager, Gustav Andreasen. “The Marketplace is becoming an ever more valuable tool for charter business in the Asia market and it’s clear that charter professionals in the region are starting to take notice.”
Requests for flights to and from Asian airports have also multiplied over the past year. Avinode has seen approximately 50% more requests for arrivals to ICAO coded airports beginning with the letters V, Z, R and W, which the Avinode Marketplace defines as Asia. Requested departures have seen an increase just shy of 20% in the same period.
Half of all requests in the Asian market are for flights within the region. For arrivals in Asia, three of the five most popular departure countries are also found within the, Avinode-defined, regional boundaries. All five are actually wholly or partly on the continent.
This is not true however for departure airports. Three of the top five airports for flights into Asia are found in European cities. In first place, unsurprisingly is Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, in third London Luton and in fourth St. Petersburg Pulkovo.
Within Asia, two of the top five most popular destination airports are found in leisure-focused locations while the remaining three could be considered more business-oriented destinations. In first and second place are airports in Male, Maldives and Phuket, Thailand, while rounding out the list are airports in Beijing, Hong Kong and New Delhi.
This data seems to indicate that, while demand for business related travel into the region is on the rise, most private charter travelers, particularly those from Europe, are heading into the region for more leisure-oriented pursuits. Data from the last three years implies that demand for travel into the region will continue to grow and it will be interesting to watch how travel patterns develop as a result.
