Phthalic anhydride (PA) is a derivative of phthalic acid, which is obtained from the oxidation of o-Xylene or naphthalene. o-Xylene feed stock is more commonly used due to the tight supply of naphthalene—as a result of decreasing coke consumption (that resulted in low naphthalene and coal tar production)—and the increasing availability of o-Xylene from refineries. PA is manufactured in two forms, namely, flakes and in a molten state. PA finds its main application in the politicization of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) due to its ability to provide flexibility and strength to the compound. In paints and coatings, alkyd resins produced from anhydrides, such as PA and polyols, are used to enable efficient curing of the coating applied.
