Tablet PC Market - U.S. Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth And Forecast 2012 - 2018

In the current market, you could get a tablet for as low as $50( around INR 2600) and the price of such a device can go upto $1000 ( in case of the new Apple iPad 124 GB ), this goes to show that the tablet market has huge potential for manufacturers and content makers. Low and mid-ranged tablets are big sellers in the developing countries like India and China where the bulk of the Android user base remains. But what about the developed world especially the US where all this started.

According to a US Tablet PC Market Research Report published by Transparency Market Research, an analyst firm, there were about 34.2 million tablets shipped in the US out of which a huge majority of course iPads but the Android is set to take over by 2017. There is a lot of good news for tablet manufacturers too, the number of tablets could double to 71.6 million units by then if things continue to grow as they are. The data has no mention of Windows tablets however mainly because of the late introduction of the platform and Microsoft may not make it to the list if things go as they are going with WIndows 8 based tablets. The Seattle based technology giant came out with top of the line features but failed to take the pricing into consideration, also it’s main competitor in the high end tablet segment Apple has managed to keep a grab on the market share mainly because of it’s innovation and early introduction.

The research also pointed out some interesting facts; the main one being a decrease in screen sizes. Tablets with smaller screen sizes particularly 8” and below are gaining popularity with the market for the larger screen tablets slowly decreasing.
Though the high end tablet market is where the money is at, one can easily realize that the growth in the market share has been because of low and mid priced ranged tablets that being sold in markets like China and India. The low cost android tablets are a cheaper alternative and more appealing to people that cannot afford to buy desktops and laptops in these two countries. The Apple iPad no matter how attractive it is has only managed to penetrate the high end segment where it remains in the top spot along with Samsung.

Though the market for tablets is slowly and steadily increasing, one cannot undermine the PC industry which will remain to be an important market despite all the innovations because of the fact that computers ( namely desktops and laptops ) are the devices that are being used to program for tablets and other devices, until someone comes up with a smart way to start programming on a touch screen.
