Of the 18 billion hours played on Steam games, more than half was taken by just six games. Some 37% of games have never been played at all, whilst 17% of all purchased games have been played for less than one hour.

This hyper-fragmentation of attention, where consumers are interested in games for only as long as it takes to buy them, before moving on, is a problem for games trying to use in-app purchases and downloadable content to mitigate the loss in revenue caused by high volume discounted sales.

An environment where consumers are flitting between games at speed, or in which games are purchased primarily because they’re inexpensive and not because the consumer has a striking interest in them, is unlikely to allow for the sale of further add-on content.
