Nobel Media is Awarded Grants for Open Data Projects

Nobel Media AB, the company responsible for media rights for the Nobel Prize, is delighted to have been awarded two project grants, a total of 100,000 SEK, from the open data initiative by VINNOVA, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems.  See detailed information about the initiative (in Swedish). http://bit.ly/LR8Kxv

Nobel Media’s first project aims to develop a pilot version of an open, quality-assured and documented API covering the basic information about the Nobel Prizes. The API can be used by developers and web sites that are interested in creating lists and content related to the Nobel Prizes.

Hans Mehlin, Director of Technology at Nobel Media says, “We hope that this API will lead to exciting new applications, presentations, visualizations and mashups of the Nobel Prize content. The API will be available from Nobelprize.org, the official web site of the Nobel Prize, which reaches a global audience and had 45 million unique visitors during 2011.”

The second project is a pre-study to develop open linked data about the Nobel Prizes. The intention is to build relationships based on basic information about the Nobel Prizes. The project will build upon metadata that already exists in some form on Nobelprize.org and create relationships between internal and external data sources. There are also plans to set up a prototype of an open linked data service. The project is in collaboration with Matthias Palmér and Hannes Ebner from MetaSolutions AB.
