Outstanding Tenor Joseph Calleja to Perform at the 2011 Nobel Prize Concert

One of the world’s currently most sought-after young tenors, Joseph Calleja, is to be the soloist at this year’s Nobel Prize Concert. Nobel Media AB, in association with the Stockholm Concert Hall, presents the Nobel Prize Concert – an event of world class stature. The concert will be held on 8 December as part of the official Nobel Week programme of activities.

Joseph Calleja was born on Malta in 1978, and started to take singing lessons as a 16-year old for fellow countryman and tenor Paul Asciak. After his debut in 1997, Calleja won the Caruso Competition in Milan in 1998 and was a prize-winner at Domingo’s Operalia in the following year. Joseph Calleja’s voice is often compared to that of Jussi Björling’s, and despite his youth, he has already sung 28 different opera roles at all the major opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic. He will now be singing at this year’s Nobel Prize Concert.

The programme comprises selected arias from French and Italian opera.

The Nobel Prize Concert is held to honour the year’s Nobel laureates, who attend with their respective parties. Also present are members of the Swedish Royal Family and guests of the Nobel Foundation.

Tickets are available to the public for SKr 790/1,490, including a printed programme and a glass of champagne in the intermission. Tickets will go on general release on 23 May.

This year’s Nobel Prize Concert will be broadcast live on SVT and will be distributed internationally and on the internet.

The Nobel Prize Concert is sponsored by DnB NOR.
