The Nobel Foundation’s return on equity amounted to 15.3 per cent in 2013

On Friday, April 25, 2014, the Trustees of the Nobel Foundation approved the 2013 financial statements of the Foundation. At year-end, the market value of the Nobel Foundation’s equity was SEK 3,403 m (3,037). Total return on equity amounted to 15.3 (7.8) per cent.

At the end of 2013, the market value of the Nobel Foundation’s portfolio capital was SEK 3,262 m (2,900) and the return on this capital was 16.4 (8.2) per cent. Year-end portfolio capital was allocated among 56 per cent equities, 15 per cent fixed income assets and 29 per cent alternative assets. Alternative assets, in turn, were apportioned among property funds and hedge funds. The return on the Foundation’s total equities portfolio was 24.6 (10.5) per cent, while the return on fixed income investments was 3.1 (6.0) per cent. The return on the Foundation’s alternative investments was 8.0 (4.3) per cent.

Positive factors behind these returns during 2013 included a certain overweighting of equity investments, especially in the United States, as well as short maturities and a high proportion of credits in the fixed income portfolio.

The 2014 Nobel Prizes were set at SEK 8 m per prize by the Board of the Nobel Foundation.

Professor Håkan Wennerström, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, was elected as the new Chairman of the Trustees of the Nobel Foundation, succeeding Torgny Håstad, former Justice of the Supreme Court.
