SoftIron® Announces Partnership with E4® Computer Engineering For Its 64-bit ARM®-Based Enterprise Server Range.

Extending Availability Of Next Generation Enterprise-class Performance with Ultra-low Power Consumption, to European Server Market Customers.

Southampton, UK, 18th November 2014 - SoftIron® today announced it has entered into a Europe wide reseller agreement with E4® Computer Engineering further extending availability of the SoftIron APM6408 server motherboard range. The SoftIron APM6408 server motherboard range introduces technology partner Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ: AMCC) 64-bit ARM-based Server-on-a-Chip™ solution to the data-centre and high performance computing markets. Attendees at Supercomputing Exhibition 2014, New Orleans USA, can discuss the technology first-hand with E4 and SoftIron at the E4 stand.

“Today we are delighted to announce the start of an exciting partnership with E4 Computer Engineering” said Norman Fraser, CEO, SoftIron. “Together we are ideally positioned to meet the growing interest in high-performance 64-bit ARM enabled computing.”

“E4 Computer Engineering is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to researching new platforms that could represent the future of technology”, said Piero Altoè, BDM at E4 “in SoftIron we found the ideal partner to develop the board for our low-power platform that we are launching at SC14 booth 4029, later this week”.

During the Supercomputing Exhibition SoftIron will be demonstrating full virtualisation running on its APM6408 series server. “Our product delivers commercially available server virtualisation to the enterprise space and is a significant milestone in the evolution of 64-bit ARM based high performance computing. SoftIron is the ARM-based server company doing most to drive the significant performance-per-watt advantage of this architecture, into the mainstream” said Fraser.

SoftIron APM6408.4 Server Motherboard

SoftIron’s 6408 server motherboard uses AppliedMicro’s X-Gene ARMv8 64-bit Server on a Chip technology. It offers up to twice the performance-per-watt of leading x86 alternatives and has the potential to be deployed at twice the rack density. Initially available in an eight core processor unit, the server boasts many power-saving and performance-enhancing innovations.

Product features:

MicroATX form factor motherboard

8 core ARM-based 64-bit X-Gene CPU

4 x 32-bit ARM®v5 for Network/Security offloads and acceleration

Up to 128GB ECC DDR3L at 1600MT/s

4x SATA 3.0 SSD ports

2x 10GigE ports

2x 1GigE RJ45 ports

2x USB3.0 connector

2x PCIe 3.0 (8-lane) connector

The SoftIron APM6408.4 server motherboard offers an integrated security subsystem with a fully featured, packet-processing engine for offloading cryptographic operations from the CPU. This provides hardware support for industry-standard, cryptographic algorithms and protocols, dramatically improving the performance of many compute-intensive security tasks.

The team behind Southampton-based SoftIron, are all seasoned innovators with experience gained at companies such as 3Com, Micronas, Cisco, DEC and Intel. Fraser adds, “Our team has worked together successfully on previous market-changing ventures over a period of many years and we are confident this is the start of a major new era for the enterprise server”.
