SwedenBio’s ”Life Science” challenges current views of Sweden's traditional industries

”Life Science" by SwedenBIO highlights from start to finish various stages from basic research to final treatment methods and how many players it takes to complete a process that can take a decade or more. It will be distributed at the upcoming Life Science Investment Day Scandinavia on March 27, Scandinavia's largest international business meeting for life science, attended by more than 300 delegates from around the world.

Life science is an umbrella term for science based on biological research. Examples of Swedish life science products that have dramatically changed the lives of many include asthma medications and the radio knife, a surgical instrument. With more than 30,000 employees, the industry is also one of the largest employers in Sweden. For SwedenBIO and its 200 member companies, life science is a generic term for drugs, diagnostics, biotech and/or medtech.

“We want to show how many elements in our society are influenced by our members’ businesses – patients, employees, health care, employers, exports, and more,” says SwedenBIO’s CEO Johan Järte. “Internationally we are known as world leaders in life science, but here at home we are experiencing something of a “shoemaker's children” effect. Our industry accounts for one fifth of Sweden’s net exports, and we want to highlight that. Swedish industry is no longer just the traditional industries.”

“This year, we are bringing together over 45 presenting companies to meet investors and potential business partners from the whole world,” says Jonas Ekstrand, SwedenBIO’s Senior Manager of Business and Finance. “We know that meetings such as this enable the continued survival of many companies. We seek to create new Pharmacias and Astras, and for this purpose, contact-making events such as Life Science Investment Day Scandinavia are just one of many ways for us to help.”

Life Science has also been a supplement in leading Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet in a Swedish version.
