FilmNav offers a one-stop shop for the British Film Industry

5th December 2011 – Today sees the launch of FilmNav (www.filmnav.co.uk), a major new online resource for anyone involved with or passionate about the British film industry.

Offering up-to-the-minute news, features and blogs from and about people in the UK film business, the site also offers comprehensive directories of everything from film schools and funding and finance companies, through to post production and hire companies.

On top of this there will also be an area where filmmakers can upload their show reels, an extensive archive section on the history of British film and a forum to bring the industry together to network, share ideas or to get projects off the ground.

FilmNav is completely free to subscribe to and already boasts over 600 pages of engaging and relevant content celebrating the very best of British.

The site is the brainchild of Hull-born entrepreneur Scott Barber, who also runs film production company SeeView Pictures Limited. Scott, who recently returned from India where he was running a sales operation for broadcast graphics and workflow specialists Vizrt, has a long history in the broadcast industry. Having graduated from the Northern Film School with a BA Hons in Film, he has since worked for the BBC, Sony and Granada TV, and is passionate about the British film industry.

“While I was in India I was thinking about getting into film producing, so, when I knew I was returning to the UK, I put an advert on Shooting People to try and get a short film made,” Scott explained. “I was inundated with emails from script writers, camera ops, actors and musicians; a real cross sections of the industry. But what struck me most was that people were having to come off the website to engage in conversation with me. There are a few sites like Shooting People or BritMovie, which cater for individual areas of the British film industry, but no sites that bring everything together. FilmNav bridges this gap by incorporating directory services, social networking, news and historical information all under one roof, making it the only one-stop shop for everything to do with the British film industry.”

The website’s look and navigation is also completely unique, being based on the road signage system in the UK, with Motorway pages, A road pages and B road pages. Explaining the design Scott added: “I wanted something that was essentially British and the road sign system seemed the perfect choice. The launch date of December 5th is also no coincidence as it’s the anniversary of the opening of Britain’s first ever motorway – the Preston Bypass back in 1958.”

Scott believes that in these tough times FilmNav could be a place to really bring the industry together. “These are uncertain times for independent British film-makers with the economy right now in deep recession, the government’s excessive cutbacks and the recent closure of the UK Film Council. Hopefully this site can make a difference by giving the industry a place to network, view and upload content, or just provide relevant information.”
