Gifting Business Comes of Age As 2012 Holiday Season Propels Gift Cards Given
Using Wrapp’s Friend-to-Friend Marketing Platform to Over 100,000 Per Day
SAN FRANCISCO – January 17, 2013 – Wrapp, the mobile gifting app that lets you celebrate the people in your social graph with free and paid digital gift cards, today announced that it has reached more than 1 million active users a scant 14 months since starting service in Sweden and then expanding to the U.S. last May.
By comparison, Pinterest hit 1 million unique visitors 20 months after launch. It took 24 months for Twitter and flash sales fashion site Gilt Groupe to reach 1 million users, and 30 months to reach similar numbers at the crowd sourced funding website Kickstarter and the peer-to-peer short term apartment rentals website Airbnb.
The really big growth at Wrapp came as the company began aggressively signing up at least one, and often two new retail partner a day in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
As a result, Wrapp saw use outperform all of its social gifting peers during the 2012 holiday gift giving season when Wrapp hit a brisk all time high of 1 million gifts sent per week. Redemptions similarly popped to 100,000 per week at the end of December making Wrapp one of the most used digital wallets in the world. Ninety percent of Wrapp usage is on smartphones.
“It all boils down to brands, offers and ease of use,” said Wrapp CEO Hjalmar Winbladh. “Our users are telling us on a daily basis that they love Wrapp’s mix of big retailers with new, smaller, but national spicy brands. They think casual gifting with free gift cards is super fun. And the Wrapp digital wallet where you keep your cards so they’re always in your pocket when you want to buy something you really want is clearly a hit. We still have lots of things to improve and fix, but so far so good.”
Built on a friend-to-friend marketing platform now used by more than 200 top retailers and brands to conduct performance-based customer acquisition and retention campaigns, the Wrapp app has made it possible for consumers to give their friends and family nearly 8 million digital gift cards in a little over a year.
