New discovery could treat serious eye infection

This important discovery was recently published in the well respected journal Nature Medicine. The molecule is essential to the virus that causes the serious eye disease epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Currently, there is no approved therapy to treat this highly contagious eye infection.

The yeast has been specially developed, and, in contrast to ordinary yeast, it can ferment pentose as well as hexose. It is a crucial step on the way towards commercialising a process for producing ethanol from cellulose-based raw materials.
