Wrapp Raises $15 Million in Series B Funding

Press Releases   •   Jun 13, 2013 06:34 EDT

Mobile Friend-to-Friend Marketing Platform Now Used by Over 200 Major Retailers

STOCKHOLM – June 13, 2013 Wrapp, the social gifting app that lets you use your smartphone to send free and paid digital gift cards to friends and family, today announced it has raised $15 million in Series B funding.  The round includes investments and continued support by Series A investors Greylock Partners, Atomico and Creandum, as well as new investors Qualcomm Ventures, American Express, and SEB Private Equity, managing third party client capital at the Nordic financial services group SEB.

For consumers, Wrapp is the easiest way to give, receive and redeem free and paid digital gift cards using mobile devices or the Web, and makes group gifting a snap. For retailers and big brands, Wrapp is a friend-to-friend marketing platform for targeted, performance-based customer acquisition and retention campaigns.

“Wrapp has demonstrated real success with big retailers and momentum with consumers in the past 12 months,” said Reid Hoffman, general partner at Greylock and Wrapp board member. “Wrapp’s friend-to-friend marketing platform is unique, and seriously valuable to both merchants and consumers.  Mobile will transform the shopping experience and will be key to customer engagement.  Wrapp offers the best way to create branded word of mouth with a measureable increase on sales.”

Added Niklas Zennström, general partner at Atomico and Wrapp board member: “Wrapp is targeting a huge market using social networks and smartphones – two massive shifts that are changing forever how we communicate, shop and celebrate the people we care about – and it’s getting bigger every day. I believe the next 12 months will be a break-out period for Wrapp and its friend-to-friend marketing platform.”

Wrapp will use the Series B funds to continue expansion, including hiring staff for its U.S. operations in San Francisco.

During the past six months, Wrapp has focused on improving its app and operational performance, and enjoyed rapid growth of new retail partners, new users, and digital gift cards given, received and redeemed.

Since the company began service in Sweden in November 2011 and expanded to the U.S. in May last year, consumers have used Wrapp’s iPhone and Android apps to give people in their social graph nearly 15 million digital gift cards.

More than 200 national and multinational retailers now use Wrapp’s friend-to-friend marketing platform to drive online consumers into offline, physical stores in the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Australia.

“Before Wrapp, very little money was going into giving brick-and-mortar merchants the kind of consumer activation and loyalty tools that are now commonplace for ecommerce sites,” said Johan Brenner, general partner at Creandum, the Nordic venture capital firm that provided Wrapp’s seed funding.  “It was clear to us from the start that Wrapp’s friend-to-friend marketing platform would be game-changer and it’s totally living up to that expectation.”

Added Hjalmar Winbladh, Wrapp cofounder and CEO: “In almost two years of operation, we’ve learned that people who love shopping, love getting exclusive promotions for themselves just as much as they love giving gifts. Over the coming year we’re confident social shopping will become a highly targeted and personal media channel connecting consumers with brands they love, and we want to become the default destination for that.”

To start sending free and paid gift cards to friends and family, download the Wrapp mobile app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play, or use Wrapp’s web app at www.wrapp.com.

Wrapp Users Redeem Over 1 Million Digital Gift Cards

Press Releases   •   Feb 21, 2013 09:00 EST

Social Gifting App Accelerates On Heels Of Successful 2012 Holiday Season

SAN FRANCISCO – February 21, 2013 Wrapp, the mobile gifting app that lets you celebrate the people in your social graph with free and paid digital gift cards, today announced that its users have now redeemed over 1 million gift cards from more than 200 popular national and multinational retailers and brands.

“When we say Wrapp makes gift giving fun and easy we’re not blowing smoke,” said Hjalmar Winbladh, Wrapp’s CEO.  “Consumers love the convenience of being able to use their phone to give gift cards, and they especially like that the gift cards are stored in their phone, so they always have them in their pocket when they’re ready to buy something.  As for retailers and brands – we believe we offer the most cost effective brand-building service available as they increasingly transition marketing for a more mobile, and social network-driven world.”

For consumers, Wrapp is the easiest way to give, receive and redeem free and paid digital gift cards using mobile devices or the Web, and makes group gifting a snap. For retailers and brands, Wrapp is a friend-to-friend marketing platform for targeted, performance-based customer acquisition and retention campaigns.

The news that consumers have used Wrapp to redeem over 1 million digital gift cards comes just 30 days after the company reported it reached 1 million users, which happened only 14 months following start of service in Sweden and expansion to the U.S. last May.

Wrapp’s big growth spurt began in November and December as the company started aggressively adding at least one, and often two new retail partners per day in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

As a result, Wrapp saw use of its Apple and Android app skyrocket, and as predicted, has seen redemptions accelerate in 2013 as recipients cashed in their holiday gift cards. Ninety percent of Wrapp usage is on smartphones.

New retail partner momentum and success continued this month.  In Sweden Wrapp added Lindex, a leading Northern European fashion chain. During the first two days of its campaign Wrapp users sent more than 90,000 Lindex gifts to their friends, reaching 4 percent of the total addressable market.

Lindex said it was impressed by how quickly Wrapp was able to drive in-store purchases and that it could not think of another media channel that would allow them to reach so many of the company’s core target customers in just two days -- especially in a non-intrusive and genuine way through their friends – and only paying for actual sales delivered.

Similarly, in February Wrapp completed a four-month campaign with one of the largest health and fitness club chains in Sweden, generating new memberships equal to four percent of annual sales.

In addition to Sweden and the U.S. – which is now Wrapp’s largest market in terms of users and gift cards given and redeemed – the social gifting service also currently operates in the U.K., Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Australia.

To start sending free and paid gift cards to friends and family, download the Wrapp mobile app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play, or use Wrapp’s web app at www.wrapp.com.

Wrapp Friend-to-Friend Marketing Platform Helps PayPal Stimulate Adoption of Mobile Payments Service in Sweden

Press Releases   •   Dec 13, 2012 08:00 EST

STOCKHOLM – December 13, 2012 Wrapp, whose mobile gifting app lets you celebrate the people in your social graph with free and paid gift cards, today announced that its friend-to-friend marketing platform is now being used by PayPal to win new customers in Sweden.

During December and January, PayPal is kicking in SEK 49 ($7.35) on top of every free gift card available on Wrapp when Swedish consumers use the mobile payments service instead of a credit card to add a minimum of SEK 1 ($0.15) to a promotional present before sending it to one of their friends.

That means a free SEK 100 ($15.00) gift card from the popular trend-setting men’s and women’s clothing store Rizzo, for example, instantly becomes worth SEK 149 ($22.50) when PayPal is used to top up an individual or group gift.

“Wrapp is an innovative alternative for reaching new customers and we’re glad to be able to collaborate with them,” said PayPal Sales Manager Sweden/Norway Daniel Aronowitsch.

Added Jean-Francois Rochet, PayPal Senior Director Marketing, Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa: “Wrapp makes gifting easy, simple and fun with a viral effect that can turn a 50 SEK free gift card into a 1000 SEK present that all your Facebook friends have contributed to.”

For consumers, Wrapp is the fun and easy way to give, receive and redeem free and paid gift cards using mobile devices or the Web, and makes group gifting a snap.

For large retailers – and now service providers like PayPal – Wrapp is a discount-free, friend-to-friend marketing platform for conducting performance-based customer acquisition and retention campaigns.  With Wrapp, retailers and service providers can drive highly targeted sales, and receive real-time access to aggregated campaign and customer demographic data.

“PayPal’s creative use of our mobile friend-to-friend marketing platform is testament to it versatility and value to more than just giant brick and mortar retailers, and we look forward to expanding our partnership to more markets,” said Hjalmar Winbladh, CEO of Wrapp, which is now used by over 180 national and multi-national merchants in eight countries.  “We know that Wrapp and digital wallets have great synergy.  There are definitely many strategic applications for our technology that can be developed with partners like PayPal.”

Wrapp began service in Sweden a year ago and now also operates in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Australia.  In just one year consumers have used Wrapp to give their friends and family over 5 million digital gift cards that are stored in the recipient’s phone so they’re always in their pocket when they want to buy something they really want.

To start sending sponsored and paid gift cards to friends and family, download the Wrapp mobile app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play, or use Wrapp’s web app at www.wrapp.com.

Social Gifting Wednesday Provisions Black Friday Shoppers

Press Releases   •   Nov 20, 2012 09:00 EST

Sephora, Levi’s Among Top Retailers Using Wrapp to Give Shoppers Over $200 in Sponsored Digital Gift Cards Before 2012 Holiday Shopping Season Officially Starts

SAN FRANCISCO – November 20, 2012 Wrapp, the social gifting app that lets you celebrate your friends and family with digital gift cards, today announced the first ever Social Gifting Wednesday on November 21 – the Wednesday before Black Friday when consumers across America traditionally begin their holiday shopping.

On Social Gifting Wednesday many Wrapp retail partners including Sephora, Levi’s, Warby Parker, Rent the Runway, Fab.com, Gemvara, hayneedle.com, and others, will be providing sponsored gift cards each worth $10 or more, adding up to well over $200 in value that Wrapp user can give to friends and family – no purchase necessary.

Unlike ecommerce sites that ship presents to peoples’ homes, Wrapp is the fun and easy way to give, receive and redeem sponsored and paid gift cards using mobile devices or the Web, and makes group gifting a snap.

“Most consumers are expected to take a conservative approach with their gift-giving budgets this year, making head starts with sponsored gift cards for shopping all the more important,” said Hjalmar Winbladh, Wrapp’s CEO.

The average holiday shopper is forecast to spend about $750 on gifts, décor, greeting cards and more, up slightly from the $741 they spent in 2011, according to the holiday consumer spending survey conducted by BIGinsight last month for the National Retail Federation (NRF).

“People will use Wrapp now to give sponsored gift cards to their friends and family before they go shopping, and then use Wrapp again to buy and send the gift cards they’ll give as holiday presents,” said Winbladh.

When it comes to 2012 holiday wish lists, the usual culprits are on top this year: clothing, books, DVDs, video games, and electronics, says the NRF. But just like the last five years running, gift cards stand head and shoulders above all the others.

The NRF’s survey found six in 10 (59.8%) of those polled want to receive gift cards this year, up from 57.7 percent last year and the most in the survey’s history.

“Be good to your friends and family and give them a jump on their holiday shopping with lots of sponsored gift cards from top retailers,” said Winbladh. “Don’t wait.  Download Wrapp today.  That way you can start using Wrapp right away and you’ll be ready for Social Gifting Wednesday on November 21.”

Blackhawk Digital’s Retail Network Connects With Wrapp

Press Releases   •   Nov 15, 2012 07:00 EST

PLEASANTON, CA – November 15, 2012 Wrapp and Blackhawk Network have entered into a multi-year agreement that will connect Wrapp’s social gifting app with Blackhawk Digital, Blackhawk Network’s digital platform.    Under the agreement, Blackhawk’s network of egift-enabled national and local retailers will have access to Wrapp’s friend-to-friend marketing platform, and Wrapp will be able to sell those retailers’ gift cards to users of the Wrapp mobile app.

“Combining Wrapp’s mobile app with our retail network means this holiday season people can gift a digital gift card to an online friend from their retailer of choice,” said Talbott Roche, president of Blackhawk Network.  “The powerful combination of Wrapp’s mobile and social reach on Facebook with Blackhawk Digital’s network of retailers provides consumers with the best possible online gift giving experience, bar none.”

Said Wrapp CEO and Co-founder Hjalmar Winbladh, “Blackhawk’s network of retailers is nothing short of awesome, and their platform has made it super fast and easy for us to integrate. By combining forces, our users get the best choice of retailers possible to always have that perfect gift.”

The agreement between Wrapp and Blackhawk recognizes that purchasing gift cards online for friends, family and colleagues continues to be one of the most popular ways of gift giving.  And for retailers and marketers, gift cards are one of the most effective tools to acquire customers and drive shoppers online into physical retail stores.

This holiday season 60% of Americans want to receive gift cards, up from 58% last year, according to the 2012 holiday consumer spending survey conducted by BIGinsight for the National Retail Federation.

To start sending gift cards to friends and family, download the Wrapp mobile app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play, or use the web app at www.wrapp.com.

Charitable Giving Made Simple With Wrapp Social Gifting

Press Releases   •   Oct 19, 2012 06:00 EDT

Mobile App for Celebrating Friends With Digital Gift Cards Now Let’s You Celebrate Friends With Donations In Their Honor to Global Non-Profits

SAN FRANCISCO – October 19, 2012 Wrapp, the popular social gifting app that lets you celebrate your friends with free and paid gift cards to top retailers, today announced that its app can now be used to celebrate friends with donations in their honor to non-profit organizations.

“Wrapp was created to make it fun and easy to give gifts to your friends – now they’re making it just as simple to give charitable donations individually or in groups,” said Reid Hoffman, partner at Greylock and co-founder and executive chairman at LinkedIn.  “But unlike the gift cards, this is not about making money for Wrapp.  This is strictly about enabling the Wrapp platform to serve the greater good.”

Non-profit organizations participating include:

  • dance4life – giving young people information about sex, HIV and AIDS
  • Kiva – connecting people through lending to alleviate poverty
  • Operation Smile – providing surgeries for children with facial deformities
  • Plan – promoting child rights to end child poverty
  • Red Cross – humanitarian relief
  • SOS Children’s Villages – dedicated to raising orphaned, abandoned and foster children worldwide

“This partnership is the perfect meeting of social good and the social web,” said Matt Flannery, Kiva co-founder and CEO. “Wrapp introduces Kiva Cards to new friendship circles that can be a powerful force for change. People you give the Kiva Card to can choose an entrepreneur to lend to on Kiva.org. When the entrepreneur repays the loan, your Kiva Card recipient can relend your gift again and again, literally making your gift the one that keeps on giving.”

“Wrapp makes it easy to give your friends a meaningful gift and the partnership gives us as an organization the opportunity to reach new target groups,” said Malin Forsgren, executive director of Operation Smile Sweden. “This will definitely help us to heal even more smiles and to change children's lives.”

Added Katja Skaarud, head of fund raising at SOS Children's Villages: “Social media engages people. To give people the opportunity to gift something meaningful in an easy and fun manner is exactly with how we want to combine interactivity and engagement.”

“Charities traditionally receive the bulk of their yearly donations during the last couple months of the year, so now is the perfect time for us to add gifting to non-profits, which has been part of our vision from Day One,” said Wrapp CEO Hjalmar Winbladh. “So many of us in the world have so much.  There’s no better time than the present to share our good fortune with those in need.”

Back-to-School Shopping Goes Mobile, Social With Wrapp

Press Releases   •   Aug 15, 2012 08:00 EDT

Office Depot, Angry Birds, Zappos.com Lead New Retail Partners Utilizing Award-Winning Facebook Friend-to-Friend Marketing Service for Giving Free Gift Cards

SAN FRANCISCO – August 15, 2012 Wrapp, the new social gifting app that lets you give your Facebook friends free gift cards from leading retailers, today announced the addition of new merchant partners targeting back-to-school shopping, which is projected to increase 14 percent this year, according to an annual survey conducted for the National Retail Federation (NRF).

Backed by the co-founders of Skype and LinkedIn, Wrapp makes it fun and easy to give, receive and redeem gift cards using mobile devices or the Web, and allows Facebook friends to contribute to the presents.

New retailers on board for back-to-school shopping represent a cross section of top brands, including Office Depot, Rovio’s Angry Birds online shop, Zappos.com and Roots.

In addition, many of Wrapp’s existing U.S. retail partners, which now include Gap, Sephora, adidas, MLB.com, Brooklyn Industries, The Wall Street Journal, Fab, Warby Parker, Omaha Steaks, Threadless, WeSC, Wayfair and Spa Finder, are also scheduled to make special free gift card offers available during the back-to-school shopping season.

“Times are tough for a lot of Americans these days, but parents still want to send their children back to school with new supplies and clothes,” said Wrapp CEO Hjalmar Winbladh. “Wrapp is a super convenient way to make back-to-school shopping just a bit more fun and easy.”

Back-to-school spending for kids aged 6 to 17 is expected to total $30.3 billion this year. When college students are included, that number is projected to hit $83.8 billion, according to the survey of 8,509 consumers conducted last month by BIGinsight for the NRF.

Wrapp introduced its unique friend-to-friend platform in Sweden in November 2011 and since then has taken its service to the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, and Australia.

Based in Stockholm and San Francisco, Wrapp was founded last year by a team of well-known serial entrepreneurs with extensive backgrounds in online and offline business, including digital music service Spotify, mobile VoIP provider Rebtel and global fashion giant H&M.

Wrapp’s investors include Silicon Valley-based Greylock whose partner Reid Hoffman co-founded the social network, LinkedIn, and Atomico, the London-based venture capital firm started by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström. Both Zennström and Hoffman are on Wrapp’s board of directors.

“Back-to-school is second only to the holiday season when it comes to buying, according to the Wall Street Journal,” said Winbladh.  “When it comes to shopping, Wrapp is the perfect partner for retailers that want to drive online customers into brick-and-mortar stores where over 90 percent of all sales are still made.”

Wrapp Back-to-School Retailers:

  • Office Depot – global supplier of office products and services through 1,678 retail stores
  • Rovio Entertainment – creator of the globally successful Angry Birds franchise
  • Roots – hand-crafted leather goods, active athletic wear, yoga wear, accessories and home furnishings
  • Rent the Runway – high-end designer dresses and accessories for rent on a 4- or 8-day basis
  • Zappos.com - shoes, boots, clothing, denim, bags and free shipping on all orders
