Beatlemania in Liverpool

The story of Liverpool’s most famous sons starts right at the airport, named after John Lennon.

At the Liverpool Museum you can see the stage where John Lennon and The Quarrymen played on 6 July 1957, the day John met Paul for the first time. Visit The Casbah Coffee Club, originally the childhood home of Pete Best – The Beatles’ first drummer. That was where it all began. The band practised in the cellar, and Pete’s mother was the young artists’ first manager. At 10 Mathew Street is The Cavern, probably the world’s most famous rock club. On 9 February 1961 The Beatles played their first concert here, soon becoming the venue’s house band. After seeing them perform here in 1962, Brian Epstein became their new manager, and the rest is history. The Cavern is full of Beatles memorabilia, and every night there is something or other that is Beatles-related on the stage here.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS

At the Pier Head in the beautiful UNESCO world heritage Albert Dock you can take selfies together with John, Paul, George and Ringo outside The Beatles Story, the world’s biggest permanent exhibition dedicated to the band. Here you will find, among other things, a replica of the Abbey Road studio and the famed Yellow Submarine.

But it doesn’t stop there. You can, for example, join a Magical Mystery Tour, a two-hour sightseeing tour by bus to famous Beatles landmarks such as Penny Lane (where John and Paul used to meet to get the bus to the city centre) and Strawberry Fields (originally a Salvation Army children’s home, now torn down, where John used to play in the grounds). The tour also takes you to the modest childhood homes of Lennon and McCartney: Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road. This is where some of the band’s biggest hits were written, and both houses have been kept just as they were in the 1950s when John and Paul lived there.
