Joining forces to take on Netflix

Canada's largest provider of wireless voice and data communications services and one of Canada's leading providers of cable television, high-speed Internet and telephony services, Rogers has joined forces with one of their competitors, Shaw media, in on the battle on beating Netflix in Canada.

Both Shaw Media and Rogers media has their own VOD service that’s been available in the market a few years. But as the battle is heating up and Netflix continues to take market leadership- the two companies recently announced the upcoming launch of Shomi, a SVOD service by Shaw media and Rogers Media that aims to take on streaming video players such as Netflix. The new video portal promises a superior user interface, curated programming and content to rival Netflix and is considered to be a complement to their existing VOD services.

The service, “shomi,” a stand- alone SVOD service by Shaw and Rogers, will be jointly owned and will initially be available to Internet and TV subscribers of the two service providers. Available on computers, tablets, mobile devices, the Xbox 360 and cable set-top boxes, shomi will have more than 14,000 TV episodes and 1,200 movies at launch. Shaw and Rogers have signed deals with Warner Bros., NBC Universal, 20th Century Fox and others for more than $100 million in licensed content, according to reports, including a number of hit U.S. television series.

The shomi launch is introducing an immediate incremental revenue stream and, hopefully for Shaw and Rogers, dulling Netflix’s continuing growth in Canada.

He and his team won the 2010 Gemini (Canadian version of an “Emmy”) for Technical Achievement in Digital Media for the online delivery of the Vancouver Winter Games. Rob is currently the Executive Producer of Multi-platform Video for Rogers Media based in Toronto, Canada.
