Magine - TV as it should be

News   •   Sep 05, 2014 11:29 GMT

Hosting some of the worlds best known brands and channels, including Disney, Discovery, CNN International, BBC, Eurosport, National Georgraphic, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network- the cloud-based platform, Magine, enables broadcasters and content providers to deliver live and time-shifted TV as well as catch-up and on demand programming, in the same place and across all devices.

With Magine users can subscribe to an Internet-based cable TV service that doesn’t need a set-top box, has a DVR-like catch-up TV feature and great search and lets you watch live TV right on your regular smart TV at home (or stream shows from your iOS device to your Apple TV using AirPlay) That’s what Magine has built, currently available in Sweden and Germany.

Magine is essentially a cable TV startup – a cable operator in the cloud – and thanks to the deals it has with its local broadcasters and the payment structure for compensating broadcasters that is in place in Europe, the company only pays a per-user fee to the broadcasters that are currently in its line-up. Because it runs as a cloud service, it doesn’t have any of the capital expenses the legacy cable systems face (there’s no need to lay cables and maintain them, after all).

Mattias Hjelmstedt, CEO and Founder of Magine will be speaking at Nordic Media Summit 2014, September 25th in Copenhagen. An unparalleled innovator, Hjelmstedt’s commitment to online user experience, and turning online TV into a global reality, sees him partnering with the leading figures in TV, electronics, and digital industries, as well as discerning consumers.

Hjelmstedt is joining a brilliant speaker line up at this year’s Summit, including Twitter, Telia, C More, Watson, Rogers, Telecom New Zealand, Parks Associates, Jack Morton Worldwide, FEM inc and many more.

About Magine

Magine is a secure cloud-based platform that allows broadcasters and content providers to deliver live and time-shifted TV, as well as catch-up and on demand programming, in the same place and across all devices. The business launched commercially in March 2013 in its native Sweden, hosting some of the world’s best known brands and channels, including Disney, Discovery, CNN International, BBC, Eurosport, National Geographic, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network as well as Swedish national broadcasters SVT and TV4. Beta versions have been rolled out in Germany (June 2013) and Spain (July 2013) with broadcasters relevant to each territory, and commercial launches set to follow. Magine closed a $19m Series A funding round in July 2013.

To use Magine, a user simply signs up via the web to get live, recorded or time-shifted television on their TV screen, smartphone, tablet, or computer. With just a click and a QR code, the phone or the tablet turns into a remote control for the TV, guiding the viewer in content discovery and ‘second screen’ interactions. Magine also features a user-friendly UI, and offers enviable speed and high-quality picture delivery that adapts to the available internet connection.
