PRESS RELEASE | HISTORY TO COMMEMORATE THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN

HISTORY will mark the 80^th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with special programming dedicated to one of the most decisive, important and famous military campaigns of the Second World War.

HISTORY will broadcast documentaries examining the crucial aerial conflict between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and its allies and the German Luftwaffe.

Beginning at 21.25 on Thursday 17th September, we take-off with an exclusive commission, Battle of Britain 80: Allies At War. The documentary, produced by Nik Coleman TV, offers a unique perspective of the critical period in June-July 1940, when, with Britain and her armed forces in disarray following the ragged retreat from Dunkirk, she somehow found the energy to regroup and, with her allies, to forge an airborne counter-attacking force so formidable that it humbled the mighty Luftwaffe in just three months. The film reveals untold stories from Polish and Czech pilots who had escaped prisoner-of-war camps in the Nazi-occupied zones and made their way across Europe, for a chance to fly alongside ‘The Few’ and write their names in the annals of history. Followed on 24^th September at 20.30 with WWII’s Most Daring Raids – episode one, Secret Weapon Sabotage, looks at the story of the high risk mission to ensure that Hitler could never get his hands on a nuclear weapon. Returning to their occupied homeland during one of the harshest winters on record, these Norwegian agents must infiltrate a guarded industrial plant, destroy the stocks of heavy water held there and escape back to Sweden. With the Germans on the alert and the agents operating at the absolute limit, success will require a masterclass in espionage.

Decennialang zijn de luchtgevechten van de zomer van 1940 geprezen als een gevecht tussen goed en kwaad – aanvaller en verdediger, uitgevochten tussen Messerschmitts, Spitfires en Hurricanes. De realiteit van deze gigantische strijd tussen jagers en bommenwerpers was vooral heel bloederig en lang niet zo heroïsch. Maar liefst 14.000 Britse burgers kwamen om in de strijd, naast de bijna 5.000 militairen die aan beide kanten sneuvelden. The Battle of Britain 80: Allies at War werpt een nieuw perspectief op de gebeurtenissen van de zomer en herfst van 1940. Groot-Brittannië verkeerde in crisis na een verwoestende nederlaag in Europa en de Duitse Luftwaffe kreeg de taak om de RAF te vernietigen voorafgaand aan de geplande invasie van Groot-Brittannië. Ondermaatse en slecht presterende vliegtuigen kwamen in actie, wat vermoeidheid, mechanisch falen en tactische misrekeningen aan beide kanten in de hand werkten en een bloedige tol eiste van alle piloten. Met behulp van nieuw ontdekte archiefopnames, zeldzame beelden en ongekende toegang tot veel van de overgebleven vliegtuigen, onthult HISTORY de weinig bekende geheimen van het conflict en nemen ze ons mee in de opmerkelijke lappendeken van naties die deel uitmaakten van de RAF squadrons.

WWII’s Most Daring Raids (6x60) Vanaf 24 september op donderdag om 20:30 uur

In WWII’s Most Daring Raids zien we hoe geallieerde elitegroepen risicovolle operaties leiden in heel Europa, Afrika en Azië om Hitler te bestrijden en het tij van de oorlog te keren. We krijgen een gedetailleerd verslag van de meest verbazingwekkende verrassingsaanvallen op het Derde Rijk. In deze serie zien we getuigenissen, analyses van deskundigen, wapendemonstraties en geavanceerde grafische effecten. Het belicht elk aspect van de missie en het zich ontvouwende drama.
