Following the launch of Alberta's regulated online gambling market, CasinoCanada.com spoke exclusively with Robert Kowalski, Customer Success Manager, North America at Kiron Interactive, about the next phase of the province's iGaming journey, why player retention will become the industry's biggest challenge, and how locally relevant content can help operators stand out.

Reflecting on the early days of Alberta's competitive market, Kowalski explains that while players now have greater choice among licensed operators, long-term success will depend on much more than acquiring customers through launch promotions.

"A licence creates access. It does not create loyalty. Product depth, usability, payments, customer service, and content relevance start to matter far more."

The interview examines the lessons Alberta can draw from Ontario's regulated market, how operators can keep players engaged between major sporting events, and why virtual sports can complement traditional sportsbook offerings throughout the day.

Discussing Canada's unique player preferences, Kowalski highlights the growing importance of locally relevant entertainment and points to Kiron's Legends Shootout virtual ice hockey game as an example of content designed specifically for Canadian audiences.

"As more operators enter Alberta, broad catalogues will become standard. Relevant content will matter more. A game that reflects a local sporting interest and works across mobile, desktop and retail has a clearer role than one that simply adds volume."

Kowalski concludes that Alberta's long-term success will be determined not by the number of operators entering the market, but by their ability to deliver engaging experiences that encourage players to remain within the regulated ecosystem.

"The market is open. The harder part is giving players enough reason to stay."
