Hannover, – Saft, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of high‐tech industrial batteries, has made ‘new energy storage solutions for the new electricity world’ its theme for Hannover Messe 2012. Visitors to Stand B34 in Hall 13 can discover a range of smart lithium‐ion (Li‐ion) battery systems that deliver significant performance, reliability and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) advantages across the entire energy supply chain, from grid stabilization in electricity production, transmission and distribution networks to local energy management for consumers and professional end user applications.
Saft is highlighting four Li‐ion battery ranges: Intensium Max – a megawatt energy storage solution that makes renewable generation predictable and grid compatible; Synerion 48E modules ‐ provide flexible energy storage to support the roll‐out of distributed residential and small commercial renewable energy solutions; Evolion modules – developed for off‐grid hybrid generation schemes where they can significantly reduce fuel costs and CO2 emissions; Intensium Flex systems ‐ high power support for UPS installations in a compact, lightweight footprint ideally suited for new generation data centres. Intensium® Max ‐ efficient energy storage at the megawatt scale Saft’s Intensium Max is a ready‐to‐install containerized solution that provides a complete, fully integrated energy storage system at the megawatt scale comprising Li‐ion battery modules, power management and control interfaces, air conditioning and safety devices. The containerized energy storage system is targeted at medium to large scale on‐grid solar and wind power installations, where the effective implementation of state‐of‐the‐art Li‐ion technology can smooth the intermittent generation and ramp rates inherent in renewable power sources. Intensium Max is also used in medium and low voltage grids to provide various grid support functions such as peak management or voltage support.
Synerion® 48E Li‐ion modules for local energy management systems
Saft Synerion modules are the main building blocks for highly scaleable battery systems that provide flexible energy storage solutions to help encourage the roll‐out of distributed residential and small commercial renewable energy schemes. The effective energy storage offered by a Synerion system will time‐shift power generated during peak production times ‐ during the middle of the day for solar energy‐ to the peak demand times, mainly during the evening. This both maximizes local consumption and enhances the value of the PV system as only surplus energy is fed back into the grid.
Evolion® ‐ high cycling capability for off‐grid hybrid power systems
Saft has combined its extensive practical experience in the telecoms industry with its well‐proven Li‐ion technology to create the Evolion 48 V module that offers a unique combination of float charging capability and high cycling performance. The Evolion concept provides a long cycling life, deep cycling capability, fast charging, high charge efficiency and high energy density, while also being totally maintenance‐free. In a typical hybrid power scheme, the Evolion system operates in conjunction with diesel generators, as well as possibly PV and/or wind turbines, to ensure continuity of electrical power for an off‐grid site. This hybrid approach can enable the runtime of a genset to be reduced to less than 6 hours a day, which results in significant savings in fuel consumption (up to 75%) while also saving refueling and maintenance costs and reducing CO2 emissions.
Intensium® Flex – for high power UPS applications
Saft’s Intensium Flex system provides the very high power and reliability of Li‐ion technology in a flexible and adaptable rack mount format that is ideally suited to meet the high power demands of UPS installations, such as those now being deployed in new generation data centres. The compact, lightweight modules ensure the smallest possible footprint as well as integrating battery management, protection and communication functions. The Intensium Flex modules are also hot‐pluggable and completely maintenance free and enable a battery system to be customised to provide the optimum battery configuration, with series strings of up to 860 V and up to 16 parallel strings.
