Plasma Cutting Systems Help Oil and Gas Industry Address Challenges

HANOVER, N.H.—May, 2010—Hypertherm, the world leader in plasma arc metal cutting technology, will demonstrate the benefits of plasma at this year’s Global Petroleum Show in Calgary, Alberta. Hypertherm will partner with Mathey Dearman, a manufacturer of patented cutting and beveling machines for all types of pipe.

Plasma works well for a number of oil and gas applications: whether building a pipeline, repairing an oil rig, or constructing a pressure vessel. Plasma technology produces high quality cuts at fast speeds; reducing the need for secondary operations and enabling the cutting of more metal in less time. In addition, plasma transfers less heat to the work piece than oxyfuel resulting in a smaller heat affected zone. Another benefit of plasma, especially when using air-plasma systems like Hypertherm’s Powermax brand, is that the systems can go anywhere, including off-shore.

The Global Petroleum Show (GPS) is one of the world’s largest oil and gas exhibitions. More than 60,000 people from 100 countries are expected to attend this year’s show from June 8 to 10 at Calgary’s Stampede Park. This year, the show will take an in-depth look at the challenges facing the industry—including economic and environmental factors—and the technologies most likely to meet those challenges.

Hypertherm designs and manufactures the world’s most advanced plasma cutting systems for use in a variety of industries such as shipbuilding, manufacturing, and automotive repair. Its product line includes handheld and mechanized plasma systems, plasma and laser consumables, as well as CNC motion and height controls and cutting software. Hypertherm systems are trusted for performance and reliability that results in increased productivity and profitability for tens of thousands of businesses. The New Hampshire based company’s reputation for plasma innovation dates back more than 40 years, to 1968, with Hypertherm’s invention of water injection plasma cutting. The company, consistently named one of the best places to work in America, has more than 1,000 associates along with operations and partner representation worldwide.
