Paul Group presents serial production-ready PH2P truck at IAA Transportation 2022

Pressemitteilung -

The Paul Group is shaping new mobility: the first serial production-ready hydrogen truck from Germany will be at IAA Transportation 2022

  • The Paul Group presents the PH2P® hydrogen truck ready for series production, with a comprehensive infrastructure and service concept from after-sales and "pay per use" including H2 training and certification
  • Smart, flexibly scaled H2 tank system for OEM and conversion specialists
  • Further development for the Paul Group focused on "Transforming Trucking" with innovations in Paul Digital Services, Paul Academy and certification

Vilshofen/Hannover September 19, 2022 – At a IAA Transportation press conference, the Paul Group re-introduces itself as a company that has evolved from Europe's leading manufacturer of special vehicles, Paul Nutzfahrzeuge, into a group of companies additionally focusing on new mobility solutions, with battery electric or H2 drives. Paul is active in the series production of its own vehicle development as well as in after-sales services, maintenance and repair all the way to digital services, training and certification. At the trade fair in Hannover, the Paul Group presents several innovations including the hydrogen fuel cell truck the Paul Hydrogen Power® Truck, or PH2P® for short, and the modular, scalable Paul H2 tank system PH2P® Storage.

Paul Hydrogen Power series production begins

The PH2P® Truck is a production-ready, transportable, medium-duty hydrogen fuel cell truck with a total train weight of 24 tons and a range of about 400 kilometers. The hydrogen tank system, now installed horizontally, holds 30 kilograms and the vehicle consumes about 6.5 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 kilometers. It can be fully refueled within 10 to 15 minutes. The maximum speed of the PH2P® Truck is 85 km/h, with a continuous power of 120 kilowatts and a peak power of 300 kilowatts. The continuous torque is specified at 2800 newton meters. The first 25 series production vehicles from the Paul Group will be delivered to customers by the end of 2022.

PH2P® is built on a Mercedes Atego 4x2 Glider chassis. Equipped with rear-axle air suspension, the truck uses an 80 kW fuel cell from Toyota as well as a single-stage 120 kW drive from Voith with continuous torque of 2800 Nm and two 60 kW batteries. The vehicle weighs around 7000 kg without bodywork. The drive management has been implemented in cooperation with pepper motion, a manufacturer and developer of innovative, emission-free drive systems which managed software integration for this project.

Next Mobility Consortium provides complete H2 infrastructure

With PH2P®, the Paul Group is presenting a concrete product for series production that promotes hydrogen as a key resource for a sustainable energy future. "We see hydrogen as the energy carrier of the future in truck transportation," says Bernhard Wasner, Managing Director of the Paul Group. The company is providing the appropriate refueling infrastructure through the Next Mobility consortium, among other groups, which also includes the refueling station operator MaierKorduletsch, represented at IAA by Managing Director Lorenz Maier, and Shell Germany, represented by Energy Transition Advisor Jörg Debus. MaierKorduletsch has already started building one of the most powerful H2 filling stations in Europe on the Paul Group site in Passau, with completion scheduled for the second quarter of 2023. Then up to 10 trucks can be refueled with hydrogen here directly one after the other at two dispensers - a refueling process with 30 kg of hydrogen takes 10 minutes.

The consortium will facilitate a regional, scalable value chain from green hydrogen production, right up to the production of H2 trucks with electrolyzers, logistics and refueling facilities. In addition, a highly flexible pay-per-use model is being made possible for transport and logistics companies via Shell. Bernhard Wasner: "This means that haulage companies can integrate hydrogen technology directly into their fleets without risk and at low cost. We’re offering a concept which allows everyone to refuel with green hydrogen in an environmentally friendly way, improve the CO2 balance of their own company and save on high costs in the future."

Paul presents smart, flexibly scalable H2 tank system for OEMs and conversion specialists

In cooperation with the hydrogen pioneer ANLEG, Paul Group offers a unique, separately available PH2P® Storage tank system for hydrogen commercial vehicles: this modular system can be individually adapted to any type of heavy-load vehicle, regardless of size, load or volume. It is scalable and ideal for OEMs or vehicle converters who can use it flexibly without spending time on their own, lengthy and expensive development work, and without high expenditure on immediate availability. Many decades of experience from both partners have gone into this project. The certified complete system includes everything from the cylinder to the screw connection, from the controller to the safety technology. It can be installed in accordance with ABH guidelines, including FEM calculations, and features innovative components as well as a patented leakage detection system for high and medium pressure. The system can be easily mounted on the vehicle, is easy to maintain and allows rapid troubleshooting. It can be optionally operated with a vehicle energy management system and expanded in a modular fashion. This means that flexible configuration of the number of tanks and their horizontal or vertical installation is possible with the Paul PH2P® Storage tank system to suit the respective truck type.

Paul is inventing itself.

Paul, a market leader in Europe for special vehicle construction in the commercial vehicle sector, is presenting itself for the first time at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2022 in Frankfurt with a new corporate structure. In future, the Paul Group will form the umbrella that bundles all corporate activities. The collective motto is also new and will be communicated for the first time at IAA: "Transforming Trucking".

Paul Nutzfahrzeuge is a specialist in transforming series production vehicles into customized solutions for customers all over the world and is the market leader in Europe with over 1,000 vehicles per year. The company also offers its customers adapted special vehicle solutions for series production.

Paul stands for new mobility and delivers climate-neutral transport solutions - starting with the transformation of classic diesel propulsion in the commercial vehicle sector to climate-neutral mobility including the necessary infrastructure, from retrofit solutions for used trucks and buses to the new development of battery electric and H2 fuel cell trucks based on glider chassis from leading manufacturers. In cooperation with leading digital start-ups and other external specialists, Paul is driving the implementation of new technologies and the development and expansion of H2 infrastructure.

Paul offers and develops digital services and trainings. Currently, this includes software engineering, software development, integration of assistance systems, monitoring and remote diagnosis, as well as training and certification across the entire H2 and e-mobility sector.

Paul Service Center is responsible for vehicle dealing – sales, rental, maintenance and repair of passenger cars and commercial vehicles – as well as after-sales service.

IAA Transportation as an international platform

For the Paul Group, the IAA Transportation is the most important date in the calendar and an ideal platform to meet its customers from Germany and all over the world. Important partners of the company will also be present at IAA Transportation with next Mobility solutions: including BPW, Bergische Achsen Wiehl, with whom Paul has developed the battery electrically driven 7.5-ton BAX truck and brought it into series production. Also present are the hydrogen start-up KEYOU with H2 buses and trucks and pepper motion, a specialist in retro-fitting battery-electric buses and with whom Paul is integrating the alternative H2 and electric drives.

About the Next Mobility consortium

Together, Paul Group, MaierKorduletsch and Shell form the Next Mobility consortium, which is realizing a holistic concept for medium-duty trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells – from the production of H2 trucks and hydrogen manufacturing, logistics and refueling options, to pay-per-use services. The aim is to create a regional, scalable value chain. With PH2P®, the Paul Group has developed Germany’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck.
