Kevin Magnussen ready for the IMSA finale at Road Atlanta

Following his podium finish in Japan, the Danish BMW factory driver switches from FIA WEC to IMSA as he prepares for the famous Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in Georgia this weekend.

Following last weekend’s World Championship podium at Fuji in Japan, Kevin Magnussen is now back in action at Road Atlanta, where the Dane will compete in Petit Le Mans, the finale of the IMSA championship. Magnussen will share one of the two works BMW M Hybrid V8s with the car’s regular drivers, Philipp Eng and Marco Wittmann.

It will be Magnussen’s second Petit Le Mans after making his debut last year, when the Dane, together with Eng and Dries Vanthoor, looked set to challenge for a podium finish. However, a puncture with just 10 minutes remaining in the 10-hour race dropped the trio out of contention and down to ninth place.

This year, Magnussen’s task is to help Eng and Wittmann finish the IMSA season on a high. The pair have secured two podium finishes during the year but are out of championship contention ahead of the finale. This means the trio do not have to manage their race around championship points and can instead afford to take greater risks in pursuit of a top result.

“I’ve really been looking forward to coming back to Petit Le Mans. Last year was my first time at Road Atlanta, and the race was exactly as crazy and intense as I had imagined. It’s a fantastic track, and 10 hours of racing with traffic, darkness and all the chaos that comes with IMSA makes it a great challenge. We don’t have a championship to worry about, so we can afford to be a little more aggressive and take some chances if the opportunity arises. The goal is to help Philipp and Marco finish the season as strongly as possible, and hopefully we can be in the fight for the podium,” says Kevin Magnussen.

BMW M Team WRT arrives at the season finale with strong momentum following the latest IMSA round at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Eng and Wittmann’s teammates in the sister car, Dries Vanthoor and Sheldon van der Linde, secured the BMW factory team’s first IMSA victory of the 2026 season.

Magnussen, Eng and Wittmann will compete in the 11-car GTP class, where BMW M Team WRT will go up against factory teams from manufacturers including Porsche, Aston Martin and Cadillac. This year’s Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta gets underway on Saturday, October 3 at 12:10 PM local time.
