Security in Maghreb – a top European policy concern

The challenges of security in the Maghreb, the Northern African region on the EU’s doorstep, is rarely making headlines in Danish media, but it is a top European policy concern.

On Thursday, November 25, 2021, the security in Maghreb will be on top of the agenda at an event hosted by The Danish Foreign Policy Society and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco. The event is free and open to all. Participants must, however, sign up online via the Danish Foreign Policy Society’s webpage.

The backdrop of the event is the fact, that the EU’s security is highly dependent on security in the countries across the Great Maghreb region, who are right now struggling to respond to domestic and global economic challenges in a context of weak regional cooperation.

“The deteriorating security situation in the Maghreb Region is becoming more and more alarming, it is why Morocco has committed itself at the highest level of State to promoting peace, security and stability not only in the Maghreb region but in the whole African continent through a proactive approach combining shared responsibility and co-development”, said the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Denmark, Khadija Rouissi.

To discuss the security challenges and solutions in the region will be four experts on the topic, Noufal Abboud, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Nordic Center for Conflict Transformation, Niklas Kabel Pedersen, partner in Voluntas, that has an office in Tunis, and Rasmus Alenius Boserup, Director of EuroMed Human Rights. Director of the Danish Foreign Policy Society, Charlotte Flindt Pedersen, will be moderating the debate.

Morocco was from the beginning dating back to 2004 one of the countries selected for the Danish-Arab Partnership Program and Morocco continues to be one of the stabilizing forces in the region. The country has been open to reform in many areas, and its experience with Islamists sets it apart from its neighbors. While Algeria and Tunisia have resorted to military and constitutional means to remove Islamists from power, Morocco’s moderate Islamist party, the PJD, were removed by the country’s citizens through the ballot box in September this year.

The event “Security in the Maghreb” is offered in English and takes place Thursday November 25, 2021, from 17.00 to 18.30 at Auditorium 1.1.18 at Center for Sundhed og Samfund, Øster Farigmagsgade 5, København K.
